My Sammy is an indoor/outdoor cat. I usually only let him out during daylight hours, however, last night around 9pm, I let him out and an hour later he still wasn't home. I sat outside for another hour calling him and then, off in the distance, I heard him scream. I looked but couldn't find him. About 20 minutes later, I walked onto my back screened in porch and Sammy was sitting outside the screen door with his little head looking down. I ran and opened the door. He hesitated and I finally coaxed him inside. He was limping but I didn't see any blood. I waited until he got into the house (off the porch) and I tried to look at his front paw/leg. He wouldn't allow me to touch him and he just wanted to lay down. I watched as he tried to get comfortable but his paw/leg was giving him a fit and my poor lil' fella couldn't get comfortable at all. I noticed, also, that his collar was gone. I still saw no blood. I went over to him and stroked his head, letting him know that everything was okay - he was home now. He kept jerking to every lil' noise he heard outside. On his actual paw, I noticed a puncture. I tried to pick up his paw gently to see if I could see another hole, thinking maybe a snake bite. He jerked and started to get up. I wanted him to remain comfortable so I left it alone. About 10 minutes later, he started kind of dry heaving for a few minutes and I rubbed his throat and it subsided. He remained in the chair all night and I got him to eat a little bit this morning. His leg is swelling up into his lil' shoulder area. He's tired, seems depressed and sad, like cats do when they're sick. I still want to kind of lean towards the snake theory, as I live in the Blue Ridge Mountains, but I don't know. How would his collar get lost if it were a snake?? If anyone has any insight or suggestions or advice, I would greatly appreciate it. That cat is my heart - I can't stop thinking, "If only I hadn't let him out...."
