Dear fellow catowners

I have picked up our sweet Richi from its private breeder, mommy n daddy last Saturday and have transported him in a softshellbox. Its almost like a bed but has a gumnet covering the layingpad. So theres enough airflow and sightpossibility.

Anyhow, the problem I have is he has peed in there right after arrival and has done so twice since we are back home. I am putting the transport box away now and just going to take it out if we need to actually transport him.

Is it possible the smell of his mom and dad are still on it that makes him mark it? Cause he doesn't have any slipups throughout the house and uses the toilet perfectly for the Number2's Im still very proud of him for being so independent and smart.

Thanks for any advice.

Your fellow catlover Kathrin

Hi Richi The Cat and welcome to TCS!

Two things may be happening here.  Many cats won't wee where they poo and so the box my seem like the next best thing... and secondly, just like a litterbox it has sides and a bit of the 'feel' of a litterbox.

I'd clean the transport box really well with an enzyme cleaner to remove any suggestion of past wees and put it away.  And add another box so he has the option of choosing where to go.

Good luck!

thank you very much for ur fast reply. I have now took a normal plastic box that is not too high so he can easily enter n filled that one with toilet paper that I rolled into lil balls so its nice n comfy. He seems to love playing in it but whether he will pee in it Im not sure. I will put it next to the normal cattoilet n see if he does. I actually when cleanin the toilet never found clumps that looked like pee to be honest. Mostly it was the good old turds hehehe

thanks again for the suggestion and the welcome:-)

I'm not sure the toilet paper litter box is a good idea. If he starts peeing on the soft toilet paper, he might see any soft fabric as a "litter box." Clothes baskets, blankets, ect..

I would just put two litter boxes out with regular litter. One for pee, and one for poop. Cats really like digging in sand like litter. Plus, clumping litter is fantastic for getting out the pee, and not having to dump out a box of litter every week. Also, I've had good luck with Dr. Elsey's Litter Attractant. They also make a litter, but I just buy the additive and sprinkle it in with the litter. Here's the link.

Hey there, thank you for the link. Since we are in Switzerland Im not sure we can order that product but I will gladly check it out to see if I find a comparable one here in stores. I am now exploring the pet store online in Switzerland and finding many additional great products to what we purchased already. Thank you:-)
