Food similar to NutroMax?

Hi, I just took in a four month old kitten. She came with a bag of IAMS dry kitten food, but I'm trying to switch to wet NutroMax kitten food. A 3 oz can of NutroMax kitten food is about 94 cents, and it's the cheapest of the healthier options available to me that I know of. My brother and I are paying half and half for all of her expenses, but my parents still are trying to push us to buy cheaper food. I live right by PetCo, but my brother and I are willing to drive a bit further to PetSmart if needed.

So are there any suggestions for other wet kitten food options of the same/higher quality that are cheaper?

Thank you!

Congratulations on your new kitten.

Fancy Feast classics are a decent, affordable food.  Make sure its the cans labeled "classic' since those are the ones that are grain free and much better than other Fancy Feast lines.  Their classic line is the only one which is grain free.

Try and stay away from fish since its not good for them.  The flavors without fish as an added ingredient are the Liver & Chicken,  Turkey & Giblet, Chopped Grill Feast.

Petco and I think Petsmart carry a brand called Merrick.   Its a decent food a bit more affordable than other brands.   They sell them in 6 oz cans so perhaps you can save money by buying bigger cans.

Hopefully others here will be able to help you with other brands.

@Lokhismom beat me to it on Fancy Feast Classics! They're very decent (that word again!), particularly for the price. Merrick's also pretty good: I'd probably suggest going for the pates because, if I remember correctly, they don't have vegetables. (A lot of their swanky sounding foods, like chicken divan and beef wellington have peas, which add to the carbohydrate counts.) Our cats love Merrick's limited ingredient turkey and duck foods, which I think are particularly good.

Since you mentioned Petco, you might want to have a look at their Soulistic brand foods. Most of them have fish (tuna) so you don't want those (I agree with Lokhismom about fish, too) but there are a few that are chicken-based. Our cats love their Harvest Sunrise (cans) and Autumn Bounty (pouches): they're both chicken with a little pumpkin, which can be very good for cat regularity. A lot of the Soulistic foods are higher in carbohydrates than a cat should get (IMHO) but I think they're great as an occasional treat. They're also not the cheapest food for the amount of meat you get, though the meat is nice shreds.

Whatever you decide on, it's almost always a good idea to "rotate" between various foods, to give the cat variety. It can also let you feed some more expensive food occasionally, even if it's only as a treat. Kittens really eat a lot so it's worth mixing price as well as various kinds of food!

Congratulations on your kitten!

Do you live buy a Trader Joes? Their canned cat foods are pretty good for the price. Idr the exact cost per can, but I think it's less than the cost per can for Fancy Feast here (.85 cents). They come in 5.5oz cans btw. Not the best, but I keep it in my rotation.

Try PetSmart's own Grreat Choice line of canned foods. They're inexpensive.

Petco is having a 50th annviersary sale right now until Nov. 7 so stock up on food and other necessities while you can. Check your local store flyer for details: http://petco.shoplocal.com/petco/default.aspx?action=nuep&adref=utilityhdr

Wal Mart's Special Kitty brand is similar to Fancy Feast and costs less.

Independent pet stores are worth a visit. Sometimes you can find the same big band names of food for less or there may be a store discount if you buy so much food at a time or something.

To save money on canned food, buy cans that are 5.5 oz  or larger (food can be portioned out into single meals as needed), buy cases of food instead of individuial cans (indy pet stores often give discounts on cases), see if the pet food company offers coupons (Nature's Variety is one company), and sh op around for the best prices (sometimes buying online is cheaper than buying from a store).

I agree about Fancy Feast classics, Grreat Choice from Petsmart (pates only though) and Soulistic. The Good Karma is shredded chicken breast in a broth like gravy. It's not the cheapest but it gets a seal of approval from all 3 of my picky eaters. The Harvest Sunrise does too. The regular price is $1.19 for a 3 oz can and $1.69 for a 5.5 oz can. It does go on sale fairly often though. Mine also like the Friskies pates. The 5.5 oz cans are usually .48 cents at Wal Mart and the 13 oz cans are $1.08.

If you have a tractor supply near you they also offer grain free food - a 5 oz can is $0.69 per can and Kroger ha recently added their own brand of grain free canned food called Advantage at $0.79 for a 5 oz can. The advantage has a bit more liquid in it so if you have a cat who needs extra fluid or likes it that way it might be a good alternative. Good ingredients in both of these brands

Oh my gosh, this is so helpful!! I'll definitely look into those brands and compare them, as well as try to stock up during sales. Thank you so much everyone!
