I've been giving my cat slices of sandwich sliced meat for quite a while. I feel awful, but he absolutely loved it and he misses not getting it now. I'm a vegetarian and he would clamour for the quorn ham, so I thought giving him actual ham would have more necessary carnivore nutrients. I feel stupid now. Turns out the quorn ham has more salt than some of the other stuff on the meat shelves that I've never looked at before. What can I do for poor disappointed Peter.

Deli ham, even the prepackaged ones, is pretty high in salt and contain preservatives that aren't any good for a cat. Vegetarian meat probably isn't any better.

The best healthy real meat treat you can give to your cat is plain cooked chicken or turkey. Poach a whole boneless skinless breast or thigh in plain water. Shred or dice up the cooked meat and give a few pieces to your cat. Freeze the leftovers for later use. The cooking liquid can alos be given as treats. It'll be like broth. You can freeze small the broth into cubes (siicone ice cube trays are best), and then put the frozen cubes into a baggie to save space. Take out a cube and some of the chicken to defrsto for a treat. If your cat also eats canned food, you can use the frozen broth to make the canned food more interesting and as a way to add water to the food.

Raw meat is also great as treatsbut some cats won't touch raw meat.

A little canned tuna or salmon, the kind in water not oil, is fine as an occasional treat.
