Hi everyone,
My cat Rami who is 3 years old went to the emergency vet last Saturday for a urinary blockage. I saw him squatting outside the box and barely producing anything. They catheterized him and were going to keep him 48 hours but he was really unhappy about being there and wouldn't let the vet touch him, so they released him after 24 hours. He bit several techs when they tried to

Sorry I hit post too soon. He bit several techs when they put him in his carrier to come home. He's a lovey sweet boy to me at home, so he was really stressed.
His urine amounts were never as big as normal after coming home. Lots of small amounts- some quarter sized, some somewhat bigger. When I scoop his box (3x day) he jumps in and tries to pee and only a bit comes out. He tried 5x last night when I was in there. Though this afternoon he had some more normal sized pee spots. This is his first full day off meds (was on buprenex, prazosin and acepromazine). Could the meds have made him feel urgency to go when he didn't really need to, making him go small amounts?
My vet can't do PU surgery and I haven't been that happy with them so I have an appointment with a new one tonight. Since the blockage he's on royal canin so, I mix tigh water, and also bought a fountain and feliway. I'm just discouraged that the catheter didn't resolve the problem. I'm wondering if they should've kept him longer at the emergency vet.

After being catheterized, peeing erratically is the norm, from what I've read.  As long as he is able to urinate, that's the key.

Is this the first time he's ever blocked?  If so, I, personally, wouldn't be thinking of surgery at this time.  The S/O should help a LOT, and then with the right foods, plenty of water, and keeping his stress levels down, you may be able to prevent this from ever happening again.   The S/O should help dissolve any remaining crystals, then he should be switched to a different food for maintenance (I'm guessing the Vet already discussed this with you?)  Many people stay with prescription foods C/D if Hills Brand, and some people prefer to go with low phosphorus, low magnesium wet foods, usually with extra filtered water added.

The main thing too, though, is that stress level.  Believe it or not, stress can cause this issue.  Is he under undue stress?

I agree on the PU surgery if this is the first blockage I wouldn't consider it. I think it should be used after multiple blockages and nothing being successful. Your kitty is in pain and everything you are describing is normal. It will take a couple weeks for things to go back to routine. I had a lot of success with my cat in increasing the number of waterbowls around the house to push more fluid and pushing more wet food. My cat is on Purina ur. Right now the main objective is making sure some pee comes out whether a lot or a little, whether he leaks or gets it all in the litterbox doesn't matter. As long as it's coming out it's a success. You will be following your cat to the litterbox for awhile. Right now in all likelihood there is a lot of swelling in the bladder itself and the opening to the bladder and it hurts when your cat pees. The pain meds and muscle relaxer is going to help a lot. Your kitty will be back to normal soon I wouldn't rush to get him a surgery.

Hi.

I'm sorry you're little one is struggling.I agree with both posters.Food ,stress,cystitis,crystals/stones all will contribute on what your cat is exhibiting.Dry diets being a huge culprit. We can never get enough water into our kitties.Good they gave you bup for pain as it is really painful.I can give you a link to a group who only deals with urinary problems in cats.Corn silk is often used a natural remedy to help soothe the urinary tract & inflammation.Plus they just have over 30 yrs of experience dealing with every urinary issue cats have.I agree pu surgery should only be a thing of last resort. Here is their link and yes it very prominent in the cat world.Very few females become blocked as males have such a tiny urethra. So what you see in the litterbox as per clumps is huge.Complete blockage is an emerg right now. Here is their link at yahoo & yes if you don't belong to yahoo it is very easy.Free just google making a yahoo account. That's it & hugs & soothing which is horrific for the little ones. These groups being a huge help for all of us!!!!!!!!
