Hello Ladies and Gents, we got our first kitten from a breeder 10 days ago. She was a 9 week old Ragdoll Himalayan mix when we first got her. We took her to the vet a day later and gave her her shots, deworming, flea gel and a full checkup. 3 days later Lucy was losing her appetite, she started drinking less water so did her visits to the litter box. When she completely stopped eating and drinking we visited the vet, he said that she has a GI infection. He gave her 2 shots one to make her more energetic and the other for the infection. He also prescribed an oral medicine for the infection and a baby solution filled with electrolytes and nutrients to be force-fed till for 24 hours.

Lucy gave us hell with the meds, I had to literally wrestle her to get her to consume the meds and there was no improvement whatsoever. I called the vet and he told me to bring her over, she stayed there for 2 days and was given an IV (She tore it out the first night, so they had to hook her up in the other hand which traumatized her I think). The vet assured me that she was eating/drinking well and her waste was solid (no diarrhea) and that I should give her the infection med for the next week and take her back for a checkup. Since she gotten home, she's been exhausted; sleeping and hiding away from us. She hasn't eaten nor drank in 4 hours, but used the litter box 5 times or so. I notice that her excrement was becoming more watery after each bathroom visit.

Is this a normal behavior after the IV or should I be worried?

UPDATE: She just puked for the first time. It wasn't a lot, but was yellowish.

She still sounds very sick to me and at her age she is too little to loose much fluid or weight. If she is sick and it is yellowish - assuming she has not eaten food that is that colour, yellowish fluid would be bile which her body produces.  I think you should call your vet again and get them to see her ASAP.   I don't know how long you have had her back home but it sounds like she still has this infection.

It's 1:00 am over here and the vet is closed on Sunday. Can she go another 36 hours til the vet opens or am I risking dehydration?

She's spent the whole time sleeping and going to the litter box since she came back home. The vet should have kept a couple of more nights. I forgot to mention that she tore out her IV overnight when she was at the vet. So they had to hookup the IV on the other hand and bandaged the self-injured one.

I forgot to ask the vet when should the bandage be changed/removed. Can it wait till the next vet visit in 36 hours or should I do it myself?

I would leave the bandage if it was me but see what anyone else thinks - mostly because it will be to keep the area clean and prevent infection and it would be hard for you to replace it if there was a problem.

Are you able to get her to take any fluids at all, from a dropper, syringe, tap, bowl or anything?  Licking up gravy or watered down food put in front of her or from a dropper?  I am really worried about her as she is so young.

Are there any emergency vets where you are, or a number your vets have for you to call out of hours?

She puked a lot a couple of hours ago, it was all bile like last time. I'll try to call the vet on his cell in 6 hours or so.

She's a pain to force-feed. She gives me a hard time trying to give her 0.6ml of meds.

I'm worried she's getting dehydrated. She's been disconnectd from the IV for 15 hours now and hasn't drank a drop. Add to that her runny stool, frequent litter visits and young age.

I'm starting to think that this isn't a simple GI infection.

I would call the vet's office and listen for after hours instructions.  This is serious and really needs to be addressed sooner rather than later.

I agree. I'm sorry to hear you're going through this with her. I'm not surprised at all by her behavior, so I wouldn't worry about that per se right now. She's not only not feeling well, she's also underwent a LOT of stress recently, so even when she gets well, you can expect some stress-related behavior.

Getting her well is top priority now, obviously. Let us know what the vet said.

To my experience, kitties get somewhat traumatized by going to the vet and by forced medication.

I have been somewhat successful with feeding small babies (e.g. two weeks old, no mother) fresh poached fish fillet.

This also seems to resuscitate appetite for sick kittens, and help them recover quickly. I don't think vet food works as well.

You will have to recover the trust of the kitty slowly. Wash its face gently with a warm wet washcloth, also ears and inside of ears, hold it close to your heart.

Your cat may possibly be suffering a reaction to her shots.

At this point she really needs fluids. Hopefully an emergency vet can supply sub-q's.

I'm so sorry that she's so ill, and hope she improves soon.

Please update when you can.

It sounds to me that the vet gave you a random diagnosis simply from her symptoms, but something more is going on.

What color/consistency is her poop?

Is she still vomiting?

The constant peeing is due to the IV fluids she got. Her body will absorb what it needs to rehydrate and she will pee out the rest.

However, unless you are able to get down a good amt of fluids since she has been home, the fluids she was given will be gone in about 24 hours after the IV ends.

The biggest danger is dehydration, so whatever the cause is, she must stay well hydrated.

Why do I suspect panleukopenia?

The fact is, a good reputable breeder would have given her first vaccine and dewormer PRIOR to her being adopted out.

Let us know what's going on now.

I waiting for somebody to mention the breeder. Should this poor baby not be returned. You were given an ill cat. The vet doesn't seem to know what he's doing poor little baby.
