4 1/2 yr old female OSH has been sick. She hasn't eaten anything on her own for about 1 wk, Took her to vet last Sunday (today is Friday) where she received rehydration - no fever- red inflamed mouth- -; Sunday blood from stools several times-

and was  only drinking water and staying near water bowl or sleeping

Back at vets on Monday  vet gave  me  amoxicillin to start next am - again rehydrated  .  in night  she had diarrhea ( dark brown)

Tuesday - she only drank water and stayed near water bowl or in on bed - walking around at times sluggish and back legs seem to be weak.

Thursday morning at vet- rehydration again since she is not eating or drinking on her own.  Vet said she'd give appetite stimulant. Thurs pm at vets for 2nd rehydration and give food with syringe (1/2 of 10 cc syringe- very little - she is not eating !!! help!!

Thursday pm late- diarrhea dark brown had to clean her as she stepped in this, but I'm afraid i might be hurting her and can't really get her clean with towel.

Friday am hydration but vet doesn't take blood sample and says to come back again in afternoon.for antibiotic shot.

Vet doesn't feel blood test is necessary since we would be doing same treatment and feels it is gastrointestinal (not parasitic problem) so she prefers to wait it seems.

I keep reading websites and think it might be kidney failure since she used to go to litter often and urinate, etc. but maybe this is just her restlessness too since it could be symptoms of so many diseases.

Any advice from someone?

Bumping this in the hopes some others will jump in. The lack of food/appetite is very worrying. I hope you get to the bottom of this soon, and that Belle starts to get better. Mega :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:

Thanks very much- she ate a few teaspoons of food at different intervals today; got rehydrated by vet who still doesn't think blood sample is necessary until next week. Shell be on antibiotics for at least 4 more days, still has diarrhea, but at least she appears to be more alert.

Any other feedback is greatly appreciated

At this point I would say you need to find a different Vet.  Pronto.  Something is clearly wrong, and she needs more than just fluids.  If her mouth was red and inflamed, that might explain her not wanting to eat, but something should have been done about that and it sounds like nothing was.

So NO blood tests have been done in any of these visits?

OK, just saw your latest post that she's eating a few bites now.  Is she drinking at all?  If so, can you get her some Cat Milk.  they sell it at most pet food stores.  Be sure to get the kind that 100% nutritionally complete.  That will at least get her some nutrition. If you can't find any, try raw GOAT's milk.   Does she normally eat wet or dry food.  If dry, see if she will eat wet food, as I think there may be an issue with her mouth as stated above.  That is probably NOT what is causing her diarrhea, but I do think there is something wrong that is causing part of the problem.

I absolutely agree with mrsgreenjeens mrsgreenjeens . I was hesitant to suggest it before, but a second opinion really is essential. This has gone on too long without any answers already. Mega :vibes: for your sweet girl.

Thank you for comments: Yes she took a few spoonfuls of high grade tuna in water that i mixed with royal canine recovery wet food. Normally I give her dry mostly so this may be a wakeup call to give her more wet anyway since she has a problem drinking enough water it seems. Vet said she has gingivitis (her breath is very bad - prob also due to stomach upset and when she threw up the bile few days ago)

I called another vet this afternoon who said if condition didn't improve she should have blood work as well. So…I'll give it til Monday for further improvement since she at least has now eaten "something" yesterday and today…then I'll insist on bloodwork to be done if necessary. Here's hoping! It's so great to know I can at least write this down and it's heard by some caring cat lovers since, as you may imagine, cleaning diarrhea, litter constantly and trying all kinds of food enticement not to mention stained blankets, towels and sheets is no picnic when one is alone !

Don't know what time zone you're in, but am guessing Vet's are closing up for the day.  Is that new Vet you called by chance open tomorrow?  Honestly, I'm not sure I would wait until Monday.  If cat's go too long without eating, or without eating ENOUGH, they can develop Hepatic Lipidosis, which creates even more problems, life threatening problems.  I know, I had a cat die from it
, after 4 months on a feeding tube
.  So....don't want to scare you, but I think this situation is serious.  It may simply be caused by her mouth issues, but it seems to be escalating rapidly.  I may be overreacting...I hope I am, but it sounds serious to me.

Update:

It is now Sunday afternoon in Belgium where we are. After visit to vet yesterday morning, she received rehydration again and was more responsive, continued to eat EVERY time  food given and even taking a bit of water on her Saturday.

She has eaten twice already today (recovery can from Royal Canine was very good) both wet and dry food. Still has a little diarrhea but vet says to continue with antibiotics for the full week and we will do tests if condition worsens. But for now, she is eating a lot and almost back to herself

Thanks to everybody with advice!

Well this is very good news
.  Still have no idea what caused the diarrhea issue, but once she appears to be recovered from all that, I would think about having her teeth looked at.  If she has gingivitis, that won't go away on it's own and could cause her to stop eating again.  THAT can cause major issues.
