I'm currently fostering a litter of nine kittens along with their mother. I've been supplemental feeding them with a bottle and now they are 5 weeks old and should be eating solid food. My usual dry food for weaning is Royal Canin Mother and Baby Cat, but so far only one has shown any interest it, which surprises me because all my past kittens have gobbled it up. I've been trying different canned foods, just to try to get them interested in solid food. So far the canned foods I've tried are Royal Canin Baby Cat, Iam's kitten, Blue Buffalo kitten, Fancy Feast kitten, Hill's a/d, and regular Fancy Feast. The only one I've gotten the majority of them to eat is the regular Fancy Feast, they wouldn't touch the kitten formula. I've also tried chicken baby food mixed with formula, and just straight chicken baby food and they had no interest in that.  Anyone have any recommendations on a food they really like to use for weaning?

Have you tried moistening the dry food with formula? They also might like Purina kitten chow moistened with formula.

I think sticking with something - a wet and a dry - will allow them to get used to it. At five weeks I would not expect all 9 kittens to go for the solids. Many kittens transition better at 6 weeks.

Also, we've found that mixing some formula milk into the wet food to make a mush aids the transition. If they like regular Fancy Feast, I would give them that and stick with it. Letting them lick from your finger might help. So might watching an adult cat eat.

Kudos to you for caring for a litter of nine :).

I haven't tried using formula to moisten the dry food, primarily because they don't even like the formula very much. There was about a 1 1/2 week period when almost all of them were pretty good with drinking it from the bottle, but now they completely refuse the bottle, and won't touch formula if I put it in a dish. I did find a pouch product labeled as a "lickable treat," primarily a little bit of meat with lots of sauce, that they all seem to love. I'm going to try mixing that with some of the dry tomorrow.

Their weights all vary quite a bit, but they all have nice round tummies and are active and playful, so I'm not obsessing too much over the scale at this point.  I'm just thankful that they all have made it this far. They were really lucky to be born to a very attentive mommy.
