Hi everyone, I am looking for advice with our cat, I apologise in advance if this is in the wrong section.

Our cat (Tilly) is a three year old black tabby and is a house cat, it has never showed any interest in going outside unless it is dark and only as far as the patio.

About two and a half years ago when till was still a kitten we noticed she became either very shy with people and run and hide or she would come and investigate on full attack mode,
We took her to the vet and they suggested we try different foods and move her toys, bed, scratch post and litter box around the house so she doesn't get too territorial about one area. We also tried feliway plug ins at the bottom and the top of the stairs, this made no difference

She is very selective about who she likes, she is crazy for my wife, she tolerates me, and she is ok with our parents (it's like she knows they are our parents) and she doesn't see them often, and she sees everybody else as a target.

About two years ago my wife's cousin came into our house with her baby briefly before we all went out, the baby started crying and the till went nuts and attacked my wife, we took her back to the vet and we were told she had aggression anxiety. This has not improved to present and we just shut her in our bedroom with all her toys and food etc when anyone comes round.

My wife is now pregnant with our first child and we are looking into what can be done about tilly.

We are looking into trying to re home her but my wife can't bring herself to call the cat rescue home nearby and neither can I as I have grown quite fond of her and her quirky ways (the only cat I have ever seek that enjoys sliding down the banister rail)

Do you think she is suitable to re home?

Probably not, and certainly not to a home with small children.  But there are people who live very quiet lives who Tilly might thrive with - but you have to be completely up front about her issues.

There are antidepressants and antianxiety drugs for cats, it might be worth speaking to your veterinarian about.

The incident with the cousin's baby may not be an accurate indicator of how Tilly will do with babies.  Since the meeting with the baby was sudden and loud, it sounds reasonable that the cat would have gotten freaked out.  Of course, I don't know what you mean specifically when you say she attacked your wife?  If it was the reasonable kind of scared (like scared of a vacuum cleaner and taking a few swipes) then it sounds situational, but if she went completely crazy and bit out a vein of something then I would be more wary.  I wonder if it would be different with a more gradual process? Like, setting up the crib and letting her smell it and see that it's not a threat (but don't let her sleep in it, otherwise she'll claim it as hers).

If you do decide that you can't keep her, I would definitely say that she can 100% be rehomed!  You'll just have to find her the right kind of home; no kids, perhaps no other pets, lots of stability.  Let us know what you decide!

I had a cat like this for 13 years. She was a challenge, and many times people told me to give her up. She was diagnosed with anxiety early on but I couldn't afford medication at the time. Once I started making more money I took the plunge and did the medication. It made a WORLD of difference, but she was never a 100% normal cat.

Before you try to rehome her, since you love her in spite of these challenges, can you talk to your vet about the anti-anxiety medication? Maybe see if your vet or someone in your community knows an animal behaviorist you can consult?

If those things don't work, and you do have to rehome her, I just ask that you look for a reputable, compassionate rescue in your area that understands her challenges and will absolutely not take her to a kill shelter. If she ends up in the wrong home, they will get frustrated, drop her at the shelter, and she will likely be euthanized.

When she attacked my wife she was mental, all four paws latched on to her legs and was biting too,
