It really helps to restore my faith in humanity to see people like you and your wife in action. Thank you so much for investing the time and energy into getting Kiwi truly healthy and giving her an amazing home. One test of character is how a person treats the most vulnerable living creatures. You've passed with flying colors!
:yeah: absolutely.

I hope little Kiwi gets lots of belly rubs - that little spotted tummy is too cute to resist!

When I think about where Kiwi was a few weeks ago.. The fear she went through.. Just a baby thrown on the highway.. We all know how she could end up..

And now there she is... Happy, safe, cared for.. Now Kiwi has a family..

So my wife and I are thinking about taking our kitten Kiwi with us to Kansas City for Thanksgiving. It's a 5 hour drive, and we will be gone 3 nights, so we didn't want to leave her alone that long. I have a friend that will check on Buffy and Willow every day, but just brief visits. Is this a good idea? What would be the best way to keep her calm in the car? Do you think it will be too much stress for her? If we decide to leave her at home, then we are going to shorten our visit with family. I'd like to hear some suggestions; what would you do for this situation?

Why you are concerned that the trip may be hard on her? Has she been in your car much? Part of it depends on how confident she is in general, and if she's generally nervous about new things then i would advise against it, but you really want a cat sitter to come in twice a day if possible. The best way in my experience for cat sitting if you can do it is to have someone stay at your place...but that's a personal thing.

Generally speaking Kiwi is probably going to be be happier at home with her cat friends, and if you take her, there is always the possibility of re-introduction issues. Do you want to take her with her for your comfort or for hers? If for her then i would at least consider it, but if its more for you I would consider not doing it, especially if i had a good cat sitter.
Thanksgiving is a tough weekend to ask someone to stay at my home. I would prefer the twice a day visit, so I'll ask my friend about that. I've never traveled this distance with a cat and the idea of taking her with is preliminary. She's only been in the car a few times, but she seems relaxed in her carrier. She is a very curious little kitten, and safety was my main concern.

I understand the importance of having a good cat sitter, but the reality is that I've only lived in Springfield for a few years; so I don't have a large network of people I trust. I just started a job search campaign so I can move closer to family.

I think it's not a bad idea. She's still a baby and she still needs some supervision, so 3 nights will be long to leave her alone. Even if she would be at home with "her gang" (Willow + Buffy).

Regarding keeping her calm in the car, I've never had any experience keeping my Grizzly in a car for so long. But he tends to be calm and then a bit vocal, cause he wants to get out of his carrier. As soon as I get him out of the carrier, he sits calm and watches the road and goes to sleep.. I've never had to do something to keep him "contained"..

There are sprays though, like Feliway, that help the kitty remain calm in their carrier and prevent them from getting stressed during traveling.. You simply spray the carrier, let her "investigate" and "tuck her in"
There are other brands too, based on Valerian herb.

But, like I said, I've never had to take Grizzly on a 5 hour car ride, so I just told you what I would do, if I were in your shoes. I bet there is a bunch of other members that are more experienced on such an issue.

(btw, she's gettin' gorgeous by the week!)

I vote to take her.

I think that cats can do pretty well on car trips. Our senior cat went with us on a weekend trip and he's a pretty good traveler. We took him on a trip that was 12 hours each way (600 miles) and he did pretty well. I plan to take him for future trips too.

I had a less than stellar experience leaving the older cat at home during vacation so taking him seems to be better for him and us.

FWIW, my uncle is a truck driver and my aunt says that they've taken their kitty on the truck before and that the cat is very comfortable with the truck.

Not all cats dislike traveling. Apparently their kitty has his own special areas on the truck and is pretty comfortable with the arrangement.

I think a young kitten is more malleable than an adult cat. My sister had a foster that she brought home (6hr drive) and the kitty was fine. I would take her, I think getting her use to trips and different environments will be a good thing for her.

Agreed about thanksgiving and since she seems calm in a car then its probably fine. Keep her in the carrier. Let her pee and poop at home before taking her.

Thank you everyone for the suggestions, we really appreciate it. We decided to take Kiwi with us and we're about to go out and buy a new carrier. When we first found her, she was in our car wrapped in a jacket for an hour and did well, even with all her issues.

Oh my, what a happy, happy thread! I think it is WONDERFUL that you took this little baby in and that she is doing so well! It's amazing how much all your little ones look alike. And what amazing human beings you are for taking Kiwi into your family and getting her fixed up. What a happy story (I won't say ending, it's really a beginning!) to something that could have been easily tragic.

I need to read things like this more often. I'm going to re-read it again when I get home.

And let me say how much I really needed to see something like this right now. Thank you - more than you know.

I really need to post some photos from my Wife's phone; she has some really great pictures.

Kiwi's health is still thriving, although her and Willow were bad this morning. Chasing each other around the house knocking down pictures and causing mayhem. Kiwi learned from Willow to kick litter everywhere and has to be the first to go whenever I clean it. They are too funny, I can't be mad at anything!
