We have one of our rescues "Samar" she is not a big fan of being brushed. The issue is that her fur is very dense and it begins to look terrible almost like there are cigarette buts of fur on her. She recently allowed a lot of brushing for her (about 5 minutes) and I was able to get tons of hair off of her and the "cigarette butts" as well. Problem seems to be much worse going towards her hind quarters she will hiss and meow when we try to brush where she can't see and she really needs some grooming. Any thoughts would be great.

Can you take her in to a groomer at least to get the big mats taken care of?

I am considering that my concern is she doesn't. Take well to strangers handling her at all and I don't want someone being mean to her.

I think the groomer is the way to go. They have experience with all kinds of cats. However, if she is a rescue, I am not sure. They always ask to see the animals immunization records.

What about a Vet? or a Vet Tech? Sounds like you need a couple of people to handle her.

One to hold and one to brush.

You could try a mobile groomer.  They're more expensive but having them come to the house alleviates a lot of stress on the kitties.  I've used them before for a couple of cats that I didn't want to stress out.
