Hello all! I am a new cat mom to a 10 week old kitten. I found him in the engine of my car, and it was love at first sight! He was born outside, and he has a huge appetite. In the two weeks I have had him, he has gained about a pound. He is now about 2.5 pounds and I am worried he might be eating too much.  I give him fancy feast wet food because he has a broken jaw and can't eat dry food yet. He eats up to 9 oz of the wet food everyday and he is always hungry. I just feel like maybe I am feeding him too much and I want to set him up for a healthy weight later in life. Is he eating too much? He just always seems hungry!

That amount sounds about right. Kittens need lots of calories to support rapid growth.

Wet food is great too. It contains all the nutrients your kitten needs, plus the vital moisture needed to keep his kidneys and bladder healthy. I have 2 full grown cats and a foster kitten who eat all wet foods.

Congratulations on your new kitty!

Hi so your baby has a broken jaw.Was it fixed? Depending on what you are feeding him hopefully kitten food a kitten will eat what it feels it needs. The key paying attention to the other end.The litterbox & poos.Canned is well preferenced over dry any day whether a broken jaw or not.IMO don't ever introduce dry & your kitties urinary ,bowel and overall health will be much better. If your kitten is on meds from the jaw injury. You would have to share what type & how much as per dosing. But me personally if no meds & kitty is fine let him eat.I'm assuming  fecal samples were taken in to the vet for exam as all kittens are born with worms. Many needing two treatments.Tape worm from ingesting just one flea i have seen grow in an adult kitty of mine to three  feet long when extruded may a stoneage med called felloids.(sp?)The food is feeding the worm. Also if you are noticing his drinking habits if they are also huge.A vet exam is in order to rule out any thyroid conditions.Yes even kittens no matter how young can have hyperT..Thank goodness you found him.Flea treatments like revolution work on most worms and ear mites.Tape worm requires a whole other med.But if not dewormed and a stool sample or if you have seen his poo.Tiny rice like segments are sometimes seen in the stool.Which are actually chunks of the length of the tapeworm being cut off by the sphincters. And if you has he has gained alot of weight hypert is very unlikely.Could be you have you a kitty who was fate that is gonna be one big cat.just my two bits. But deworming an absolute must for kittens and sometimes like i said they are so infested they require another dosing.HTH Honey Husgs to the babe.C
