...with the cats...
i'm a big believer in 'positive reinforcement'. my babies are my cats, and i've seen good results using positive reinforcement with them. snick only scratches on sisal posts, never on anything else, and i always tell her 'good girl! good scratchins!' when she uses her sisal posts. our jaspurr is learning not to scratch the rugs, and i'm very careful to tell him the same thing i do snick when he scratches sisal posts or cardboard scratchers. giving them treats when they've just done some 'good scratchins' is another thing i do.

i also tell my cats how they're such good cats and how they always make mommy happy. i believe that simply telling them they're good cats helps them to do good things.

when i'm especially tired and sometimes short of temper, and i find myself feeling frustrated or irritated, i'll take a short break/remove myself from the frustrating or irritating situation temporarily. it doesn't take me long to settle down, and then i come back to doing what i had been working on. for example -- this sometimes happens when i'm trying to encourage my snick to eat well. it's so very important that she does eat well, and she can be very very picky with food at times. so i take a break, doing something else for a short while, and when i come back to snick with her food she'll eat well.
