So I have 2 cats, both are fixed. One is 7 years old and the other is 3 yrs old. Recently we had gone on vacation and the sitter didn't clean the litter often so I came home to poop beside the litter box. Now my 3 yr old cat refuses to poop in the litter box whether its clean or not. I have three litter boxes, one in a separate location. I have cleaned the area and even purchases cat scent removers. I cant get her to go back to using it. Does anyone have a suggestion? she is perfectly healthy.

I want to put in here that she isnt being blocked from the litter box. The circumstance created the problem.

The first step is to get your 3 year old checked by a vet. Litterbox issues are often caused by physical issues, so its important to rule that out. The fact that she's going RIGHT BY the box does suggest a physical cause is likely.

If she's fine physically, I might try a new box of a different shape/type in a different location. I'd always rather scoop an extra box than clean up 'accidents'. It might be worth trying Dr Elsey's Cat Attract litter too - it often works where other things have failed.

I'd also want to look at reducing stress levels in the house. Stress is a big factor in litterbox problems too. Feliway is a good start, and Spirit Essences and/or Composure can also be helpful. Interactive play is a fantastic stress buster too.
