Pooping everywhere

My 1yr old cat has used the litter box a handful of times but mainly goes all around the house. Idk how I've dealt with cleaning poop up for this long but I'm tired of it and considering taking him to a shelter but I'd rather not. The litter box is always clean, I've tried different litter, putting it in different locations and he's an indoor/outdoor cat so he can go potty outside as he ppleases but he would rather do it around the house. What can I do? In desperate need of advice

My cat used to do the same thing considering we live in a 3 story house. My main mistake was that I didn't provide enough litterboxes for him, although his way always clean. So, I guess the first thing you'd have to try is put atleast one litterbox in a convenient place in each story of your house. Give him some time to get used to them, and always reward him with a treat afterwards. If he still doesn't use his litterbox you can consider spraying the litterboxes with litter attractant. The first thing to do is get him checked by a vet to rule out any physical cause for this behaviour.

Other than that, try having multiple boxes of different types (covered, open, triangular etc) and have them in different locations in the house. Some cats just won't poop where they pee. I know multiple boxes are a pain, but I'd always far rather scoop than clean up 'accidents'. Dr Elsy's Cat Attract litter may also help.

Make sure you use an enzymatic cleaner to clean up after him - its important to remove every trace of smell to his sensitive nose.

Stress/anxiety can be another big factor is this type of behaviour. See if you can think back and pinpoint any changes that may have triggered all this.[article="32366"][/article]
