We unofficially adopted a stray many years ago. Over the past two weeks he has completely deteriorated. His coat has become dishevelled, he is loosing fur around his nose and mouth and today he was at the window meowing like I have never seen before and excessively drooling.

and when I say excessively, I mean all down his chin and hanging a mile behind him.

The UK has been rabies free for a very long time, but this is obviously still very worrying! my my cat and for my family!

Is it possible he could still have contracted Rabies? or if not what is wrong with him? Is he safe to have in the house?

It sounds more like a tumor or tooth problems to me, I had a cat that strung saliva like that too. He's in distress and really needs to see a vet to find out what is wrong. His mouth most likely hurts and rubbing it to relieve the pain is causing the fur to wear off. The chances of him having rabies are about as small as you winning a lottery, has he not been vaccinated against rabies? They last for years so even one shot would help. The vet would put your mind at easen and a rabies shot more so. All the luck, and keep us posted!

How old do you estimate him to be?  If you are in the UK it is not rabies, but there are many serious illnesses that a cat can get, older cats in particular and you mentioned you got this cat many years ago. He is very sick, and he is in pain and discomfort.  He may have a serious problem in his mouth or throat, it could be an abscessed or infected tooth, or a tumor, or something else.  You cat needs a vet as soon as possible  either to obtain a diagnosis and a possible treatment that could actually fix him

Please get him to a vet as quickly as possible, he is suffering and there is no reason to prolong it.
