Hi All, I've been lurking and posting minimally since I joined. I've had a couple of threads but this is a bit wierd. My cat will only poop downstairs, and usually only wees upstairs. It's wierd.

We have 2 trays, the upstairs one is shallower, and is in our bathroom. My Partner said a couple of times she's tried to pee IN our toilet. I've never seen that, BUT if i sit on the loo she then digs in her box, sometimes she goes sometimes not. Is she just mimicking us?

I heard of a cat once before that potty trained itself to use the toilet, though have never seen it... but essentially, thats what our kids are doing when they first get potty trained is mimicing us.  So, hopefully, she IS going on the potty... I wish mine would!

Of all the cats we have, I think our ragdoll would/will be the easiest to potty train for two reasons

1.  She is absolutely fascinated when we go number 2 in the toilet; and

2.  the other cats make fun of her because her poo is so stinky... even after she goes, and she covers, the other cats will go and cover again, and again...

Other people have said it is common for cats to go number 1 in one place, and number 2 in the other.

My guy used to have just one litter box,  until he started getting iFLUTD.

The Vet said to have 2 boxes, for when I am washing one, the other is available and Artie does not have to get stressed by holding it.

Artie has now decided that one is the pee box and the other one (with high sides) is the poop box.

I have an extra bathroom, which is his.

The regular large size pee box is in front of the tub, with the high sided poop box in the tub. I do have the drain covered so none of the litter goes done it.

Artie is a very deep digger  and moves around a lot to find the 'correct' spot, so the high sider comes in handy..But not when he starts digging in the pee box and then jumps over the tub into the poop box!!! Litter everywhere!!!

Yeah Mojo Is a digger, I bleach her boxes EVERY time I clean them because she gouges out huge marks in the bottom. It doesn't seem to matter how much litter I put in she will dig until there is nothing and dig some more. I've resigned to that. I'll put 3-4 inches in the deep box and arund  1.5-2 inches in her smaller box That's all it really allows. She's been awesome and has had absolutely no accidents since we had her, so I'm reluctant to change the space or anything, even when we moved the litter box from our bedroom to the bathroom she had no problems.

I'm glad it's not just her then! she does like to watch us go. sometimes she even hops up on the rim and miows at my OH when he pees. If I'm sat down she will happily jump on my lap....creeper.

My OH doesn't want her going in our toilet. He thinks it's dirty, since I'm the litter fairy I can kinda understand why, but if she started going in the bowl all of my prayers would be answered!!

My cats seem to have an unwritten rule that a couple of the litter boxes are for pee only and a couple of the litter boxes are primarily for poop (and a little pee).  I'm fascinated wondering how they all understand which litter box is which.

Ours use separate boxes for pee and poo too. There seem to be two designated for peeing only and two where anything goes. It's the same every time I clean them! Smart kitties!

thanks for all the replies guys, I guess you'd call it Murphy's Law, but I said yesterday no accidents. today she tracked a soft little nugget into my floor, the day before my mum (hates cat and anything cat like, cat food/poop) comes. I've spent nearly two hours with a variety of wipes and anti bacs and it still smells of poop. :(

I had to clean between her toes with a few hundred pet wipes like a sharp angry set of bagpipes whilst she clawed her poopy paws in my face

I did not realise ( call me stupid AND irresponsible PLEASE) canned tuna in brine was an inappropriate snack for a cat. she will not be having that again my poor baby. I rinsed the Brine off as well so really it was just water-tuna but she has had two unpleasant movements today.

I had cats that did the same thing. Not all but some. Often when you offere a cat two litter boxes they will choose one to pee and one to poop.

Yesss! When me and my cat lived with my parents and their car, the two cats would do that. I was so interested in it when I first started to notice. Now I live on my own with my cat and earlier this year had a cat visitor and he also did it. I asked my friends if their cats do it and they never experienced such a thing. I added two kittens to my family and unfortunately they haven't adopted that behaviour yet (I'm hoping they do). It's much more convenient for cleaning.

My most recent rescues have done this and have some peculiar litter box habits as well. I have two cats and three litter boxes in my apartment. When I first got Cookie, I had 2 litter boxes in 2 locations, and she would only use the one in the living room for peeing, while she would poop and occasionally pee in the one in the spare room. I added Aladdin and a 3rd litter box, but the 3rd litter box is just next to the one in the spare room. Since then, neither of them uses the one in the living room at ALL, but they heavily use both in the spare room. Thankfully I scoop daily, but good lord those two are some prolific poopers.

No idea why they stopped using the one in the living room. It's in the same spot and configuration as it was when Cookie used it before. I haven't changed litter or anything else around the area. The only thing that's changed in the location of their food dishes. I know that cats will avoid litter boxes if their food or water dishes are too close to the box. Ironically the food dishes are now further away from the litter box than they were before (but it was never RIGHT next to it).....so I'm at a loss.

When I got Chomsky I purchased a couple of supersized litter trays as he is a big boy, then I got Pip and so obtained an average size tray in addition. For some reason, Chomsky will persist in using the small tray for weeing and because it is not quite the right size to accommodate him he uses it with his front paws out of the box and his back legs and butt in the tray. It is quite a sight to behold.

That's hilarious!
