cat jumps on me

My 8 pound cat jumps on my stomach and knocks the wind out of me almost. This is how he lets me know hes hungry. I yelled and threw a notebook at him but not sure that will get the point across. What do I do?

Hi, I don't think you should throw notebooks at your cat since it can be pretty hard with enough force. I do, however, sometimes throw a sock at my cat to distract her, not to hurt her. Maybe you can lock him out of the bedroom, if this is where he does it. Remember, negative reinforcement doesn't work well. Maybe you can feed him on a set schedule so he knows when food time is and will stop bothering you?

Throwing things at your cat is a really BAD idea. He won't learn anything from it, and your run the risk of making him scared of you...not to mention the risk of really hurting him.

The best thing you can do is totally ignore the behaviour. If it doesn't get any response, he'll stop doing it. Getting him onto a feeding schedule will also help. If he knows when to expect food he'll be less likely to ask at other times.

I have a cat that does that too, the only thing that works is to lay on my side in bed, or keep something in my lap, like a magazine, when I'm sitting. 

Hah I just wrote a post about this in another thread. It's an awful way to wake up. Sometimes I sleep with a pillow on my stomach, but I try to avoid the situation altogether by making sure there's some dry food in Bud's bowl overnight. Still, sometimes I forget and that's when I wake up go cat kamikaze.
