Hello All!

My name is Matthew. My girlfriend, Megan, and I have recently brought a new kitten into our home. We are so excited to start this wonderful new chapter in our life. We have had a new baby boy kitten for three nights now including tonight, and so far everything has gone off without a hitch and we could not be any happier.

My main reasoning for becoming a member of this site, and also posting this "greetings" thread is because Megan and I have never owned a cat before personally, let alone a young kitten. We have named him Pip, but other than me being able to tell you he has a wonderful personality and a healthy appetite (He eats about four times a day) I really do not know much else. He was found about a week ago wondering the side of the road by an aunt of Megan's closet friend (The aunt's name is Britt). He was accompanied by a female who she was certain was his sister. Britt is an adamant kitten/cat lover who along with owning several cats of her own rescues strays and volunteers with shelters regularly. Now the full length details of the story are extremely long and I am sure I could elaborate to no end right now due to my new love for all felines but I will spare you that boredom in the hopes at least some of you will make it to the end of this sure-to-be drawn out thread post.... but essentially the two kittens were separated, the sister of Pip was sent to a wonderful shelter and found a home within less than twenty-four hours (Woo-Hoo!!!)  and then Pip was suppose to go to an older women that Megan's friend works with but after a single day of having Pip decided she did not have the time to take care of him (However she did find time to ruin his beautiful fur coat that is kind of long i suppose but cutting it with what I can only assume were those Pre-K safety scissors kids had in the 90's, bathe and blow-dry him, and smother him with perfume). But alas we were able to get a hold of him after that entire debacle and do not ever plan on letting him go.

As I stated earlier I really do not know anymore than that, I believe he is about 2 months old? I have no idea how to tell his age if I even can... He honestly acts more like a dog than a stereotypical cat would I personally think. Apparently he likes baths? I am afraid to do this only because I do not want him to not bathe himself, but he does do that now regularly which I am happy to see. I cannot tell if he prefers dry food to wet food or vice versa, I tried feeding him wet food at first only which I definitely think he liked but he never really fully ate it all in one sitting the first day so I tried dry kitten food the next day and he seemed to love that. Still not eating everything at once (and its really not a lot of food to begin with) but Pip definitely seems to eat more of the dry food as apposed to the wet stuff. He purrs almost constantly which I think might be the most relaxing sound I have ever heard in my life while having a morning cup of coffee while laying in bed.

If anyone has any tips, tricks, or advice on raising a kitten any help at all would be gratefully appreciated!!!

Thank you so much for reading and I hope you all have a wonderful day!!!!

Welcome to TCS to all three of you! You've definitely come to the right place to get tips and advice about cats - or just to talk about your new boy. Do you have any pictures of Pip? We'd love to see them!

Have you taken Pip to the vet yet for a check-up? He will probably need deworming (most kittens do) and should be tested for the usual feline diseases.

About food - at some point you should probably feed Pip mostly wet food as dried food has been associated with urinary tract problems, including blockages that can be life threatening. Just something to look out for...

You will need lots of toys for your new kitten to help him work off his energy. Da Bird is a big favorite of many cats.

Congratulations on the new member of your family. I hope you have many wonderful years together! Cats really are great!
