Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone would know this. I have two cats, Newt and Navi they are not litter mates and about a month a part. Navi is white with ice blue eyes and is deaf, we got Newt not only for companionship but also to help Navi. After a few meows from Navi, Newt will walk over to her and either lick her or rub up against her. It's very cute to see.  Does Newt know that Navi is deaf or maybe just sense that something is not right about her sister?

Thanks

I have a blind cat and his doggie sisters know hes blind. I have a fenced in yard so hes allowed to go outside if he wants. My yard is kinda big and he gets lost sometimes. when he gets himself lost he just sits down and waits till someone comes and gets him many times its one of his sisssies that bring him back in :)  Animals communicate and they adjust just like we do when we cant communicate normally.

Thanks for the replies. I am new to owning cats and wasn't sure if I was just imagining it or if Newt knew what is going on with her sister. I can't believe how close they are for not being litter mates and makes me smile when I see them snuggling with each other.

Animals don't have a sense of deaf or blind. They are highly adaptive as I've found out since my cat lost most of her vision. The other cat knew something was different and has since adapted her play with Kitten. So likely your deaf cat is as adapted to communication with your hearing cat as the hearing cat has modified it's communication skills to the deaf cat. .

Likewise your method of interaction is likely slightly different with the deaf cat than it is with the one that can see and hear. My interaction with Kitten has changed in the last month and she is much more likely to inventory anyone in the room by whiskering them.

We have a deaf cat too, and I wonder this same thing about if her sisters know.  Snowy is the deaf one.  Tati acts like she is not all that smart a lot of times, but she is much smarter than she lets on.  Snowy hates to be snuck up on... and not being able to hear, its easy for the other cats to sneak up on her.  Tati likes to pounce (playfully) on Snowy while Snowy is sleeping, Snowy hates that!  I always wrestle with does Tati not know that Snowy is deaf... and its like having someone jump out from around a corner unexpectedly when she does that?  But I think she knows.  She just likes to be mean. :D
