Cat gasping for air or wheezing?

So just a few minutes ago I was playing around with my cat. I have this tree trunk inside my house that my cat loves to scratch and climb and today as he was scratching the wood he started making weird wheezing sounds. I'm not sure how to explain it but it was like he was gasping for air or basically how one would sound when we are trying to clear a throat with phlegm.  This lasted no more than probably 6 seconds.  After that was over he just left to do cat things as if nothing happened. Maybe it is nothing but has anyone had any experience with this? My cat had never done something like this before. 

I would take the cat to the vet for a check up. It may be simple exertion from playing or something more serious like asthma.
