Hi, I just realized there is an entire section here dedicated to cat nutrition! I am looking, as my title says, some high quality wet foods that will suit a diabetic cat who is well-controlled and has early stage kidney issues. I would prefer something I could pick up in-store so I could try a few for my cat. The tastier the better!

They were eating fancy feast pate, but the phosphorous in that is rather high.

Thank you in advance for help!

Have you seen the food lists at http://www.felinecrf.org/which_foods.htm? Start there. There should be foods listed that are low carb enough for a diabetic.

Definitely check out the FelineDiabetes.com message board for help. There are diabetic cats there who are also CRF. Here are just a few threads I found about food:

Some people use a phosphorus binder for their CRF cats but that is something you need to discuss with your vet.

When our previous cat was diagnosed with early kidney disease I used the charts on catinfo.org and felinecrf.org to look for foods with low phosphorous levels.

We ended up feeding her a lot of Weruva, which generally has low-phosphorous foods (which she unexpectedly liked after being a pate cat for years!): the Cats in the Kitchen foods would be especially low-carb for your cat and some of them puree well, too. Brooksie also loved Wellness Core's beef/venison/lamb, which is both low-carb and low-phosphorous. Wellness is pretty widely available and Weruva is at lots of independent stores.

Her kidney levels did improve with a diet of high-protein, low-phosphorous foods -- the vet was very surprised, ha! -- though her (many) other health problems meant her other ailments got her before her kidney disease progressed much.

Good luck with your cat's diet!
