My cat is on day 2 of taking prednisolone for IBD.  He is to take 1 pill twice a day.  I gave him a pill late morning and just realized about an hour ago, that apparently about 3/4 of the pill got stuck somewhere in his mouth because when he went to eat something, part of the pill fell out. The schedule has him getting his second dose in a couple of hours.

So, my dilemma....should I give him the rest of the pill that apparently did not go down, in addition to the second pill.  Or, should I give him the partially eaten pill now and then give him the second dose in a couple of hours.  Or, should I should forget about what is left of the first pill altogether.  I want to make sure he gets what he is supposed to but, I do not want to overdose him either.    Anyone know what the protocol is in these situations?

My cat is also on prednisolone, and if you are that close to another dose, skip it and make sure she swallows her upcoming one.

I have had several cats that had to take this medicine. I learned to put it in a pill popper and put it as far back in the cats mouth as possible. Then I had a syringe of water waiting to put in my cats mouth to make them swallow. That helped in being sure the cat swallowed the pill.

Thank you for your help.  I went ahead and skipped it and gave him his other dose later last night.  Hope it doesn't affect him too much.

I have tried the pill popper before and it hasn't worked well for me.  Usually, he doesn't have a problem taking pills but, he seems to be resisting quite a bit recently.  That's probably because I have been constantly shoving things down his throat for the last few weeks, lol.  I did syringe the water afterward like you suggested and that did seem to help!

I get the Greenies Pill Pockets and tear a small amount off, just enough to 'cement' the pill to a treat. My Burt is fooled by bacon every time! Then offer them the treat (pill side down) SECOND after letting them eat one that has no pill in it. It works every time! No fight, no hassle, and they think they are getting a treat. I have laid a big doctored treat on top of my ferals food too, and they gulp it right down, you'd be surprised how many times a cat swallows a treat without chewing. If it's too large, you can break a tablet in two and do it twice. Capsules shouldn't be opened unless you clear it with your vet, in that case they should be placed whole inside of the pill pocket. Good luck!
