How do we know if she's helping them potty?  We saw the boy pee yesterday but there's no mess in the nest otherwise.

The mom usually eats the poop until they start solids and it changes.  If she is cleaning them she is helping them eliminate

Gorgeous pictures.  Congratulations!.

Thanks so much for all the comments and the Purraise!!  Following Stormy's advice, I went in to help them potty last night and again this morning but both times Diaba was doing alternately for both kittens already.

I think the reason their weights went up so much is at least in part a factor of my timing.  I weighed them when they were born  Wednesday morning and then about 32 hours later Thursday evening.  Starting today, we will weigh them at the same time each day.  They aren't too happy about it!!

I wanted to upload a couple of videos but I haven't out them on YouTube yet.  We will take more pictures today!

She really is!  We didn't know how she would be as she is young herself and this is her first (and only!) litter.  You can see her coming to get kitten #2 off the scale because he was mewing so much!

The African cat Diaba's kittens are three weeks old and thriving!  Two little girls.

She can't believe how fast they are growing!

Actually, Diaba always looks this surprised.  She has the largest eyes I have ever seen on a domestic cat! She weighs about five pounds now, up from 3.5-4.0 before the kittens.

Beautiful mum and babies, well done

Thank you!  The advice I received here on the forum has been so helpful.  Speaking of advice, as the kittens are three weeks and two days old, our vet is suggesting that I offer them some food.  What do you recommend?  I have KMR and was thinking about soaking some kitten chow in that to make it soft.  Any other approaches you could recommend?

You can use canned kitten food & the KMR to make a mush as well as the kitten chow.

Okay, that's the plan then--I read that chicken or turkey is best to start off with rather than beef, pork or fish.

Yeah, when I saw you had one of them pegged as a male I knew that wasn't right, because they both have 3 colors! Although the one is a torbie (tabby/tortie) so it's not as obvious. Adorable little girls! That means the daddy cat was orange, so if your daughter saw an orange tom around he's the one. Diaba's eyes really are round. . .I know a cat with round eyes like that. I always say she looks like an anime character :D.

For some reason, I did not get a notification of the last two comments so I am just seeing them now!

In any event, Yes two girls, a calico and a torby!    You're right that the Dad must have been orange and I am really curious about the calico's longer fur.  These kittens were conceived in Burkina Faso, West Africa where the average temperature exceeds 95-100 degrees much of the year so it is interesting that the parents would be passing along any long fur genes to their offspring.  It seems like a longer haired cat would be at a real disadvantage in the tremendous heat!

The kittens will be four weeks on Wednesday.  We offered them some KMR on Saturday but they had no real interest.  Today after work I am going to soften some ground up kitten food in the KMR and see if they go for any of that.  They are starting to get more coordinated and stronger on their feet.  I am thinking as they get more active their appetites will increase.   As of  last night, the larger of the two, the torbie, weighed 416 g (up from 86 g at birth) and the smaller first born calico was 396 g (78 g at birth).

I named the first born calico Cat d'Ivoire ("Ivory") for the beautiful ivory in her coat and because her parents lived on the border between Burkina Faso and Cote d'Ivoire.

We named the torby Purrkina Koko ("Koko") because she was the first to purr (and purrs all the time now) and because the second born of female twins in Burkina is usually named Koko.  Whoever adopts them will probably come up with their own names but Ivory and Koko work for now

In case its not obvious, I have clearly been spending too much time in the kitten room!

I will post some pictures later today as we got some good ones over the weekend!
