I rent a small 2 bedroom duplex and my landlord wasn't thrilled with the idea of allowing cats but I finally got him to come around. He said the last tenant he had with cats had the whole house smelling! I ride horses as have always been around animals so I personally don't think cats smell bad , however, I was hoping for some tips to keep smells under control for when the landlord is around. I just don't want any complaint!

TIA !

Keeping the litter box clean is the first thing. If your cats don't spray that what the first priority is. You would be surprised how many people refuse to properly clean the litter box. I don't think you have a tough task I just think the prior tenants weren't on top of the litter box.

Also properly disposing of what you clean from the litterbox I forgot about that. I have a litter genie and it does a pretty good job. If your dumpster isn't too far I'd dump what you collect from the litter box daily.

Another Litter Genie owner here. As long as you scoop the litter box frequently, you won't notice any smells at all. It was confusing to set up the first time, but that sucker works wonders. I only have one cat at the moment, but it did a fine job of keeping his stank contained during his recent bout of diarrhea, so it gets high marks from me.

I've had cats my whole life and have never had any odor problems with them other than one cat I had as a child developed a UTI and stopped using her litter box.  Wherever she peed, it would soak into the padding and carpet.  Assuming your cat is using its litter box, you really shouldn't have any odor problems.  The main thing is to clean it daily.  You can also sprinkle some baking soda in with the litter and mix it around.  Arm & Hammer is great for controlling odor!  Also, don't go too long between full changes.  I have two cats and two litter boxes and I scoop them daily.  As for completely changing out the litter, I do it about every three weeks.  I also add a cup or so after cleaning the box to replace what I scooped out.

We have a small place with 2 cats and 3 litter boxes. People tell me they cant believe I have cats because my house doesn't smell. I just do what everyone has been saying in that I clean the boxes out every day. Instead of a genie I just used an old Petco litter pail with a cover. I put a new small garbage bag in there once a week. I also put a small layer of litter and a dryer sheet in between the bag and pail.

What you feed the cat has a result on litter box output. Low quality grain and by product filled foods, particularly dry foods,  will generally result in horribly stinky poop. Higher quality grain free foods are more digestible so less ends up in the litter box. Raw feeders say that  their cats' poop has very little smell.

Using a good clumping litter and scooping at least twice daily will help keep odors down. Dispose of the waste in an outside trash can if possible. I toss the bags of waste into the kitchen trash can and take one trip to the trash room before bed time. Thoroughly wash the litter box monthly or so with hot water and soap.

Use air fresheners / odor removers. Some are just containers of odor absorbing stuff inside (like charcoal). You can hide them around the apartment. I use Moso bamboo charcoal bags to keep odors down. They're non toxic and safe to use around pets but I'd still keep them out of reach of pets just in case.
