We've been attempting to give our 14 year old Chessy Subq fluids twice a week since the beginning of August for his chronic kidney disease.  He hated it and would fight us every time, the whole time.  We tried just about everything - warming fluids, using a thin needle, restraining, not restraining (with EZ IV harness- he really hated that), distracting him with food (he didn't care), etc.  I'd read A LOT about it, and watched many videos, but I'd only read a couple times about freezing the needles.  Well we tried that last night and it made a HUGE difference!  He only flinched a tiny bit when the needle went in (instead of trying to leap out of my lap), and he didn't flinch at all when the fluids started.  I was so happy!
Last week he went in for another blood test, and his numbers were a little worse, so the vet suggested fluids 3x week.  I finally feel like we might be able to do that.

Yay

That is great that you found a way that is easier on you both :)

Happy for you.

Freezing the needles, great idea!

excellent! i'm so glad you persisted and found a way that your chessy handles better.

i'll remember this tip of freezing the needles. i'll be switching my snick (who gets fluids for her CKD daily) over to normasol-r several days from today, and i may just need this tip to help her adjust -- normasol-r can sting as the fluids are given.

I've never heard of that. Sounds good, I'm so glad it's working for you, I know it's not easy. I hope I never have to use them again.
