Hello everybody~

Today is a holiday in my country (and tomorrow), thus all vet clinics are closed. My private vet won't answer her phone, so I honestly don't know what to do.

The emergency service is very far away and very expensive, and I don't know if getting him out for a four hours ride if advisable.

My cat Yeollie is a one year old and this is the first time I've ever seen him this sick.

Yesterday he started vomiting.

At first it seemed like the usual hairball coming up. Happened last month, as well. But then kept vomiting until we removed his food. I have to mention that yesterday his mood was still very good; he played around with his toys and wanted to get cuddles. When I woke up, he hadn't puked since, so I assumed he was feeling better and went to work. When I came home from work, I saw that he puked some more, this time the puke was yellow-ish and much more sticky. He sits at his usual spots, and seems very slow and apathetic. He didn't eat, not even once since yesterday, nor did he drink anything the entire day.

I decided to give him some water with a syringe.

I've read that I need to get some food inside of him, since it's been almost  a day and a half since he ate, so I tried feeding him some baby formula (meaty baby formula, since I don't have anything else at the moment, in the house), but he resists, doesn't seem to want anything, not even his favourite dry food or wet food, and even refuses the water from the syringe.

What do I do?

Should I take him to the emergency?

I think he's got a hairball stuck do you have any hairball remedy to give him? They do lose their appetite when they need to get it out. I'd check his skin to make sure he is not dehydrated. If not I'd get the hairball remedy to give him. If he is dehydrated I wouldn't wait to take him to the er vet.

You have to get him to a vet asap. Vomiting for this long suggests something more than a simple hairball. As hexiesfriend hexiesfriend says, it may be a stuck hairball - but you don't know where it is in his system. Not being able to keep food down for this long puts him at risk of severe complications like hepatic lipidosis too.

VET NOW is the only safe option.

Keep trying your vet, and be sure to leave messages explaining the seriousness of the situation. I understand your hesitation about a 4hr car ride. Call the er before leaving and ask to speak to one of their vets for advice on travelling with your boy in his present condition. One way or another, though, he needs seeing today.

I hope whatever is wrong is easily treatable, and that he's better soon :vibes:

The way I read it, he puked a hairball, then continued to vomit through that day until food was taken up (envisaging hungry, so eats, but then can't keep it down etc). That was yesterday.

Today, vomited bile, and has markedly deteriorated. OP also says that he hasn't kept anything down for (now) over 36hrs.

That's why I'm saying it can't wait.

If it's only been 24 hours since he started vomiting, I'd say try some plain meat baby food or plain boiled chicken.

What are you feeding him?  If it's canned food and something fish flavored, he might not be able to tolerate it.  That's very common with many kitties.

Hello everybody... Here's a quick update.

We went to a Pet ER after you all suggested that, and for some reason they didn't want to help. They gave him an IV, and demanded to do really expensive brain CT, even though I insisted that it's either something he swallowed or something bad with his stomach.

After a few more really unnecessary tests (I guess they were eliminating the worst first...), he was released home and seemed a bit high.

This morning I contacted our Vet and she told us to continue to feed him through a syringe, no matter what, and that she'll arrive a only later today. (I was feeding him really small amount of meat baby food). He puked a lot of bile, but for some reason he seems much better! He came to cuddle and sipped his water.

He didn't eat his dry food yet... and doesn't seem interested in food (looks away when offered).

I'm assuming since it's already late, that my vet isn't going to arrive today (Somehow I'm really disappointed in the veterinarian service in this country after the last 36 hours
)... so I'm not sure if I should leave him to get back to food on his own or continue feeding with a syringe?

So you still haven't received an answer as to why your kitty isn't feeling well? :/ That's must feel frustrating! Has he tried to eat by himself yet? I'm sure he'd love to eat solid food if he could. Since it sounds like he's willing to drink water by himself, it may be good to try to get some high-nutrient calories in him with liquids he could lap up like bone broth or raw egg yolk. The lecithin in raw egg yolk is also known to help dissolve the fat/oils that hold a hairball together (though I've heard that too much can cause diarrhea). I like this method of making chicken bone broth, but any plain (no additives or additional ingredients) broth is helpful:

:

He may also be fairly dehydrated at this point, so providing water with electrolytes (like Pedialyte) would help keep him hydrated. If you don't have Pedialyte available in your country, it can be made at home with some sugar and salt, the recipe here (of course, without adding juice or flavorings): http://www.oley.org/lifeline/ORS.html

I tried giving him the egg yolk just now, or any other liquids (especially with chicken and nothing with fishes, because somebody said that's not advisable), but he refuses it and spits them all out.

He doesn't look dehydrated, and even though still a bit high (lol, he's chasing his tail like a little kitten again
) he seems rather active and doesn't have any of the symptoms.

Just now he came to cuddle in my lap and drooled all over my shirt (he always drools when he's in cuddling mood lol)... so I think he's not dehydrated at all.

I'm glad he's feeling a bit better. If it were me, I'd continue to syringe feed until he starts wanting to eat on his own (or at least until my vet gave other advice).

I'm sorry the veterinary care these past couple of days hasn't been great. I hope that it gets much better now you're through the national holiday. Keep us updated :vibes:

Another update.

I called my friend's vet, and somebody finally came to see my kitty without assuming he has a brain tumour.

He gave him an IV. Gave him a bit of a sedative and took out a few really big chunks of dry-combed food from... well... you know.

He also gave me antibiotics.

So far I've given him only one pill... but several hours after it, he puked again.

He's back to being motionless and sitting in one place.

He's lost so much weight.

I'm not sure if I should feed him after he had so much of the IV. What do you guise think?

I'm going to call the vet again tomorrow morning... but I'm honestly already frustrated and clueless... no one can give me an answer and my cat is still sick.

I think he needs to have an x-ray to rule out a blockage and also to see if his bowels are impacted.

Did they give him anything for his upset stomach? 1/4 of a 10mg plain pepcid is commonly given. There are also really good anti nausea, appetite stimulants. Cerenia works well for nausea.

:yeah: That's the next step I'd be looking at. Be aware, though, that hairballs don't always show on X-rays. If Yeollie has regular hairballs, then its probably worth mentioning that that's one of your concerns when you next see/speak to your vet. I really hope you get to the bottom of this problem soon :vibes:

You've gotten a lot of good advice so I don't have anything to add. I just wanted to say that I hope he's on the mend really soon. It sounds like he's miserable.

Gee I'm sorry your little one is having trouble. When you say he had some food chunks removed from??? Do you mean he had an enema? So true hairballs we all want them to be puked up rather than going the wrong way.The small intestine of a cat is approx 2 1/2 times the length of a cats body. Not including the tail.So very long skinny tube.Hair can cause havoc.I agree with an xray to start. Also as per food.Food is life now.So true the liver will shut down & dehydration is huge with little  or no food.I'm sorry you have had a terrible time with vet care.I understand & relate totally.I have gone through many in my life.Does your kitty go out? If so is there any possibility he got into something? If not and he did have an enema & hard stool was removed, that will cause vomiting.I am from the mega Colon group at yahoo. We deal with constipation Mc etc.Have you seen a descent bowel movement from your cat? Gerber's stage  2 chicken babyfood(no onions or garlic) holds over 100 calories per jar.The more the food the better at this time.Pepcid ac as suggested is good for excess tummy acid.1/4 of a 10mg reg strength tablet. It is extremely bitter. If kitty bites it he will puke.I used to take a pce of a pill pocket(obtainable from a petstore ) and wrap the 1/4 tab & down the hatch. Then syringe at least 3ml room temp water.Never dry pill a cat.Hairballs can get huge in a cat and stop all food(chime) going through the system. They can also have what is called ileus.Which means slow emptying gut.Usually from inflammation in the 5 layers of the small intestinal wall.Cerenia is a good plan but the cause needs to be determined. I once dealt with a lady whose cat was so constipated the cat vomited alot.Very common. The vet prescribed Cerenia.I couldn't believe it.The cat is vomiting from an obstruction yet you dose a brain drug to tell the cat not to vomit .Not good.So the cause must be found out.Pls.Iv is for hydration. Now I'm not sure your cat is constipated or if i am reading your post correctly. If your cat had hard stool removed from his bottom nothing will get it out the rest without an enema.Sometimes multiple ones depending on the severity. If your kitty is not better by tomorrow I would see someone else.Do you know why they wanted to do a Cat scan?.Were they looking at his eye responses & stuff figured he had some brain disorder.Don't be afraid to speak up.Kitties in this life only have us to speak for them.Be the advocate. They are not God & are not above you.He sounds very sick and needs help.Pls keep feeding even if some is vomited.Water also but I think you said he does drink water.I hope you get some answers soon. How long have you noticed the weight loss?

Hoping you find some one that knows how to determine what the heck is going on soon.Hugs during this very trying time.C.
