Black flakes NOT flea dirt or ear mites?

I adopted a new kitten a few weeks ago. She came with a few fleas, which I quickly treated with a topical, but she's still shedding these weird black flakes--larger than flea dirt I've encountered before, and they don't turn red when wet. I would suspect ear mites, but I took her for a kennel check right after adoption and the vet checked for mites...plus she hasn't been doing any head shaking/ear scratching and her ears look clean when I check--don't think the flecks are originating there. Any idea what this could be?

Hmmm.....

If you comb her, can you get an idea where the flakes are coming from?

Black flakes makes one think of either flea dirt or waxy stuff from the ears, but not so sure that waxy ear stuff would be "shed".

How much of this black stuff is being shed?

Can you determine where these flakes are coming from? One of my cats had s little bit of feline acne as a kitten, it peaked when we went through puberty and faded away when he became an adult. Feline acne often occurs around the mouth/facial area and has a black, flaky appearance.

I don't have a fine-toothed comb at the moment, but I've done spot checks of her fur to the best of my ability and can't find the mystery things actually on her. They just appear in places where she sleeps. If she sleeps in my bed, I'll find 5-10 "flakes" when I get up in the morning. Her favorite cat bed amasses them pretty quickly. I assumed it was just enormous mutant flea dirt at first.

After googling this issue and coming up with acne, I checked her chin. It's nice and white, so it was pretty easy to see that the flakes aren't coming from there either...

I am so baffled!
