As long as the incision site is healing up well I wouldn't worry about it. Do they have to wear the cones, or can you take them off? They didn't bother with a cone for Freya until she developed an infection. (Which I think has more to do with the fact they didn't close it properly to begin with than her messing with it). Are they acting normal otherwise? Eating and drinking plenty, and no unusual bowel movements?
I'm not a vet so take my advice with a healthy dose of skepticism but I've never had a female cat wear a cone after getting spayed, and none of them have ever gotten an infection or recovered poorly from the procedure. Is there a reason why your vet has advised they wear the cone for so long? It's been five days, I'm sure their incisions are well on their way to healing and as long as they aren't particularly rambunctious cats I imagine they'll do fine without the cones on. I recently spayed my female cat and she was back to her normal routine within a few days.
Many vets recommend the cone for a full 7 to 10 days to ensure kitty doesn't lick at the incision. I always cave and take the cone off because I am a sucker.
If you take the cone off just be sure to keep an eye on them and make sure they aren't licking at the incision site.
Thanks for your input! They are eating and drinking and playing well when the cone is off. They lick at the incision site some but more at the shaved area around it. Just hate to see them in the cone. They have problems w using their litter box. Still no accidents but r not able to dig or cover up and have made mess w litter everywhere as I left the top off. Oh the joys of surgery [emoji]128553[/emoji]
Heh, maybe there are no problems with the litter box but they are just kicking litter everywhere to let you know they are extremely unhappy about recent events. I had my new stray boy neutered yesterday, to show his displeasure he peed and pooped in his carrier on the way home and trapped us in the car with his stench.
Now he sounds like a close relative of these two! They sure can find ways to let us know they r not happy with us eh? Now they are attacking each other guess we'll have to put cones on if they get too ornery their incisions look good so far so will go with breaks from cones and use when they need rest
I've never had to use a cone on any of my girls when they were spayed. I say take it off and keep an eye on their incisions. If you notice any extreme redness or weeping then get them to the vet.
Thanks to all of u! Feel better about being a softy and removing the cones. They seem to be completely fine and I am watching them for excessive licking on the tummy[emoji]128571[/emoji]
They will probably want to clean the clinic/foreign scent off their bodies and that's okay. Just make sure it's not enough licking to rip out stitches and stuff. At this point in their recovery they should be good to go.
