My name is Carol and we just recently rescued a blue/grey kitten, we named him Zeus! He was 11 weeks when we got him and covered in fleas. The people who posted the ad for this precious boy stated (in the ad and in several emails back and forth) that Zeus was a purebred Russian Blue. However, this little guy has no papers and a few white patches on his belly, chest and underarm. So he is probably just a grey domestic short hair - WE DON'T CARE, we LOVE this little guy!!
We were looking for a Russian Blue because my husband of 25 years is allergic to cats. Not that has stopped us from having cats in the past, lol, we have always had a cat until 4 years ago. After our last cat left us I promised hubby no more cats. In the past, as long as the cat has stayed out of our bedroom my husband was fine really except for the occasional "hair in his eye" which I always felt bad about.
I recently spent a few days with friends of mine in NC, Miriam and Lee, they have two cats and two dogs. I totally loved the time I spent with their cats! I called my husband and told
him how much I miss having a cat. His immediate response was "go get one".....I could hardly believe my ears! My son and I did some research and read that Russian Blue cats are among the hypoallergenic group of cats. We decided that was the breed we wanted to pursue.
So we went and picked up Zeus, gave him a few flea baths and after a few days of kitten fun he started to behave differently. My husband called me at work and mentioned the cat was snoring. I thought that was weird but just laughed. The next day Zeus seemed very tired and his breathing was labored. I was sending texts about the kitten's change in behavior to my friend Miriam since her husband is my former vet (he is retired now) and he said as long as the kitten was eating he was OK, he thought it might be an upper respiratory infection. I told Lee it sounded like Zeus was choking
Long story short, I took him to the animal ER and he had 104 degree fever! They gave me antibiotic for URI and sent us home. The following Sunday we were back in the ER, Zeus' eye was closed and we took his temp and it was 103.3 degrees! They gave us an ointment for his eye and told me to bring him to my vet the next day if his fever persisted
When I took him to the vet the next day his temp was 104.7!!! The first thing the doctor did was look down his throat - Zeus has a cleft palate! Apparently it was healing on its own however sometime the week before some food got trapped and was on its way to causing aspiration pneumonia. I was very upset with the ER doctor we saw two weeks in a row, Lee said she should have seen this issue on the first visit - Vet Med 101.
Anyway, Zeus is feeling much better, he is eating dry food (no can food for a while), my new vet and Lee (my former vet) - who know each other both believe the opening is almost healed so we are just going to watch and see. He now has his kitty energy back - full force!
Wow that was still a long story, sorry about that. I am so happy to have a cat in my life again He is now 14 weeks old, he greets me when I come home from work, he keeps me company and he loves to cuddle.
