My seven month old blue british shorthair/scottish fold mix Tuffs has had two small bald spots on his side since we took him home at 4 months old. The bald spots haven't grown or spread, and the exposed skin is not inflamed, scaly or flaky. He never seems to pay any special attention to these spots, and I'm not even sure he knows they're there. We noticed a few days after adopting him that he has small 'dents' in his fur as a result of this, they're not very visible because the surrounding fur covers them up. I'm attaching a picture of one spot, the other is basically identical and located maybe two inches away -- does anyone have any idea what this is? Our vet examined him and offered to test for ringworm but said it's unlikely due to the appearance and the fact that it hasn't grown or spread, and that it doesn't seem to bother him. The test would've been over $100 so we decided against it. I'd appreciate any insight you guys have!

and here's a few pictures of Tuffs  for good measure :)

He is SO cute!

So....I have no idea when they might be, but they are on his side?  Not on his tummy?  I only ask because one of my cats has spots that look just like this at two of his nipples.  Just at two of them.  But I guess your Vet would have been able to figure THAT out of that were the case, huh?

Thanks for replying! :D He definitely knows how to ham it up for the camera
These spots are much closer to the top of his back than his tummy, I'd say they're 2/3rds of the way up his side. His tummy is completely covered in fur. It's just so random, I've never seen anything like this before! My vet didn't have any ideas as to what caused it, though we've ruled out an infection because there's been no change in appearance since we've gotten him (nearly four months now), it hasn't spread, and the skin is healthy. Is there such thing as kitty alopecia? I haven't heard of it, but maybe it's possible..

As to kitty alopecia, technically, this is what he has.  Anytime they lose fur, for any reason, it's called alopecia (in cats)

I'm at  a loss on this. the only thing I can find even remotely possible is Cushings Disease, but he doesn't fall into any of the categories (older, female, diabetic), or have have any of the other symptoms, at least that you have mentoned.  But with Cushings, they do sometimes develop symmetrical hair loss.

I wonder if when he was a wee baby he rubbed and rubbed against something so long that it literally rubbed the fur and roots off so where it can't grow back.  You know in people who wear sock for a long time, where the socks rub, the hair stops growing after awhile.

Just had a look at the symptoms of Cushing's disease to check if anything else matched and the only symptom he has is asymmetrical hair loss, so I'd be really surprised if that's what it was -- he's a young, healthy kitty in every respect (thank god!) except for having two weird bald patches that are covered by surrounding fur. I think your suggestion about losing hair as a baby is likely because it's been like this since before we got him, and likely for quite a while before we got him because if it was brand new the fur wouldn't have had a chance to grow over. He came from a litter of seven so maybe his siblings rubbed against him a lot while nursing or something. I'll put my curiousity to bed since there doesn't seem to be any easy answers :) Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it!

Hi there! I was wondering if you ever figured out what the issue was with this spot on your kitten because I have the SAME EXACT question - I purchased a Scottish Fold from a breeder a few months ago. He is now almost 6 months old and I noticed a bald spot almost identical to the picture you posted. It's not irritated or flaky, just a perfectly white bald spot that luckily is generally covered with other hair. It's on the back of his neck, right side I believe.

I did recently move (a week ago!) so I was thinking maybe that caused it - I had read sometimes stress can cause patches but this is such a perfectly white/symmetrical shape, it just doesn't seem like hair loss per se.

Hi!

Glad to hear it's not just Tuffs with weird bald spots. He's now over a year old and the bald spots are still there, covered by hair so they're not visible unless I move the surrounding fur out of the way. They haven't changed size or shape and the skin looks the same, white with no apparent irritation. I could've taken the picture I took months ago today, that's how similar it looks. It's like he just doesn't have hair follicles in those two areas. He doesn't pay any attention to them and no other spots have appeared. I think if it were stress related the fur would've grown back by now. I really have no idea what could've caused his spots, but I'm happy there hasn't been any progression of fur loss. I hope it's similarly benign with your kitty!
