I hope you don't mind me posting this here, but my lovely rat Massey died on Wednesday morning. My fiance found her when he passed the cage on his way to the kitchen. She didn't move, as she usually comes out when anyone passes so he checked on her and she was stiff. Her sister Fergie who we kept in the same cage (rats like to live in pairs) is very unhappy, she doesn't communicate as much and doesn't seem to be eating her food, just the treats that I give her and for all I know she could just be taking and burying them.

I know some people don't think that caged small animals are on the same level as cats or dogs but I still loved her and I miss her.

Our hearts don't know the difference between species, it just hurts because of the pain it is going through. Massey was loved by you and that is all that counts, she was a valued member of your family. I'm sure she returned your love a hundred fold, and had a happy, well cared for life. It's sad that rats don't have a long life span, but there aren't too many animals that live as long as we do, so the sad truth is that we will be left behind to mourn them when they are gone. Fergie will need extra care and attention now, I'm sure she is missing her sister immensely. Please give her a kiss for me. I'm so sorry for your loss, please accept my condolences. RIP dear little Massey, you will not be forgotten and will be forever held dear in a loving heart!

I am truly sorry for your loss. Massey was your baby and a part of your family. You loved her just like a cat or dog or any animal. She was precious to you and will be missed. Give Fergie more attention as I am sure she is missing her sister. The pain over losing a pet is heartbreaking. I do feel your pain. Again I am so sorry.
Rest In Peace sweet Massey!
You will never be forgotten and will be forever missed!

I am so sorry for your loss.  And poor Fergie...I hope she starts eating properly again soon.

I'm very sorry for your loss. Rats make wonderful pets that can form a real connection with their caretakers. The big problem is that their life spans are so short. :(
