Ok guys, I am VERY excited! I have been feeding and doing TNR "ilegally" under the radar for a few months now with a local vet who does it $35-$40/feral. I think I'm the youngest person in my area doing this. I'm 25 and I have cat friends who are 50+. It can be a bit daunting being called a cat lady all of the time, but really, who cares?! They're right! LOL
Anyways, we got the OK from our local PetSmart today for setting up a table for National Feral Cat Day. I'm excited, but so nervous!
TNR is NOT embraced in our area. Trapping and euthanizing is. We will have a petition aimed at FINALLY changing this.
I have already been "warned" by an Animal Control officer, she was asking me to make sure I wasn't feeding neighborhood cats, because I can "get in a lot of trouble". I was just like ..... ..... ...."no???" LOL --- for real though, this was traumatizing for me...this was all because I called Animal Control twice on two German Shepherds who had mauled countless of my ferals. I got so upset. They came to our neighborhood daily to seek cats out until they were caught...I nearly ran them over with my car chasing them away from the neighborhood, I was so upset...I currently have around 30 ferals I care for. I am not sure what the number was before. It was so heartbreaking. It was even harder for me, because these dogs were already known, they went straight to the "owners" home and they easily surrendered the dogs over to AC...the officer called me to tell me they wouldn't be a problem anymore, and that honestly they were going to be euthanized because they were also aggressive towards her. I am a HUGE animal lover and this entire situation broke my heart into pieces.
But this is so huge for us. PetSmart even said we should come to every adoption event they have too! I know we are able to exercise freedom of speech, but I've never done anything like this before and I am so worried there could be negative consequences! Can we get in "trouble"? Anyone ever been in my boat?
We are purchasing supplies from Alley Cat Allies, as well as t-shirts.
Do you have any plans?
