Hey yall,

OK I picked my cat up from the vet a couple hours ago.  They were PACKED when I got there after work, so I had to wait around for over an hour before old Bumper was invoiced and ready to go.   They gave me some take-home meds and quickly ran over the instruction sheet - but now I'm at home trying to do this, the vet is closed, and I'm confused as heck!

The dx was: Gastroenteritis

Basically he was vomiting and sorta listless and they couldn't find a good reason why.  They gave me Famotidine (pepcid), Buprenex, Sucralfate, Clavamox, some Fortiflora packets & instructions to cook a bland diet, and.........Neo-Poly-Bac eye ointment (he had a little yellow eye discharge).

I'm good with everything but the eye ointment.   I'm REALLY squeamish about eye stuff (human or cat).  I can't even give myself eye drops - just cannot. do. it.

But of course I love little Bumpkin, so I'm gonna give it a shot.   The aftercare instructions say: "Apply 1/4" strip to both eyes every 8 hours for 10 days.  Start tonight."

And that's it.  Where do I put it?  On the lower eye lid (the "waterline" for us ladies who wear eyeliner?)  Or do I put it directly into the eyes (gah I hope not).

This seems like it could go VERY wrong if I apply it the wrong way.   The vet is now closed (of course, right) so I don't wanna make him miss his dose of this just because I'm dumb lol.

This is the medicine:

Do I do it just like this?  The vet in this video is talking about asthma/hay fever eye ointment, so I'm not sure if this still applies to the ointment I'm using:

I just don't know whether to put this IN THE EYE (omg yuck! poor baby!) or on the lower lid.    Help Bumper by helping me to not make a horrible mistake and put something where it's not supposed to go

Thanks!!

Jolie

This webpage may be helpful, http://www.1800petmeds.com/education/administer-eye-medication-cats-28.htm

It's been a while since I've had to apply eye ointment for my kitty, but I do know that you must have clean hands and the tip of the ointment tube must not touch anything, your hands, the table, the cat's eye, it cannot touch anything else because if it did, the contents would no longer be sterile.

The article sums up nicely what I had done previously for mine.

Wash your hands well and gently pull the bottom lid down, apply the ointment to the bottom lid.  When I used this for my kitten I would close his eyes so I knew it got in there good.  You do have to get it kind of inside the lid so that it is in the eye, and doesn't just get wiped off.  Depending on how your cat is when you do this, you might need someone to hold him.  It is definitely hard not to touch the tip to anything.  I do not recommend this but I had to use my finger to put it on his eyes sometimes, because he was so squirmy and it was way too difficult to apply it properly with the tube.  You're not supposed to touch it on anything though.  After doing it a few times you should get the hang of it.  :)

I tried to sneak up on my cat with the tube already open and ready. If they see you with it, they know what is coming next. I think the trick is to be quick about it. I held her eye open with one hand and then put the ointment in the lower part of her eye. I held the eye shut for a second or two. You might have to wait a few minutes to do the second eye. I would not recommend using your fingers at all to do this. Just hold cats eye open with one hand. Gently squeeze the ointment into the lower part of the eye. The quicker you do it, the better.

OK awesome thank you guys so much!!

I'm going to put Bump on the countertop and have hubby hold him still - so I'll have an extra pair of hands helping to keep him in place!

And thanks for the link above Nansiludie:
  • Your goal is to put liquids or ointments into the corner of the eye or into a pocket formed by slightly pulling down the eyelid.
  • Do not aim for the center of the eye.
So basically the stuff will  essentially go into his eye, but it's not like I'm holding his eye open and dragging a line of ointment across his eyeball.

I think I got it (though I am not going to enjoy this - and neither will Bumpkin lol)

I feel really bad having to do this, he is so freakin happy  to be home, he has never loved on me so much in his life
.....and I'm not allowed to even give him a treat afterwards, he's on a strict bland diet for a few days

Thank yall for the directions!!
