Hi all,

Just wanted to know what yall thought about this -  I took in my 1.5 year old cat Bumper to the vet on Saturday afternoon.   He had been vomiting pretty frequently Friday and Saturday morning.  I only saw him eat a mouthful of kibble on Friday.  On Wed/Thursday, he really didn't seem like himself  - he stayed up alone in the bedroom all day instead of hanging out with us in the living room like he normally does.   I noticed a recurring yellow "eye booger" that would re-form after I wiped it off.  On Friday night, I tried syringe-feeding him some water and some coconut oil (to "lube" his guts up if it was a hairball or something) and he vomited it up about 20 mins later.   I told myself Friday night that when I woke up, I would see if Bump ate any breakfast and kept it down - if not, he would go to the vet that day.

So I woke up Saturday to 2 vomit puddles, so I didn't wait to see if he would eat anything - we went to the vet.

They did an X-ray and bloodwork.   They said his bloodwork was really good (don't have the particulars, but apparently he is super healthy, they said).

The X-ray showed some kind of small fabric-like material in his digestive tract.   So they kept him overnight on fluids and other meds (not sure what) to see if they could help him "flush" it out.  They can't even really be sure what that material was - it could have been food or something non-food....so it might not even have really been a problem in the first place. they just don't know.

They did a second X-ray yesterday and it came back all clear - so whatever was on the first X-ray is now gone.

However, the vet called me about an hour ago and said that he still isn't eating very much (they've tried giving him some canned food a few times but he hasn't shown much interest).

She said that he is starting to develop symptoms of a URI - the eye discharge and she can hear congestion when she listens to him breathe with the stethoscope.   I'm worried that I made him sick by taking him to the vet - do you think he caught a URI while up there?   Is it possible the stress of being away from home is making his immune system weak and now this is happening?

It doesn't sound like it's life-threatening or anything.  They said they wanted to keep him a little longer and see if he ate any more - regardless, I can go pick him up after 6pm today when I get off work.   They are giving me take-home meds for the URI.   They said he will need to come back in if he comes home and still won't eat.    We don't mind syringe-feeding him - but I'm worried that he puked up what I tried to syringe-feed him on Friday before he went to the vet.

I mean obviously, something was already wrong with him before I took him to the vet - he wasn't eating (and he is normally my piggy) and he was vomiting and he was being really anti-social.  I could see the one recurring eye booger and I could just see it in his eyes that he didn't feel good.   Is it possible he had a URI all along?   I'm just scared that I made him worse by taking him to the vet - I'm thinking maybe I should have just given him more time to resolve the problem on his own.   I'm sure he is missing his family - and we all miss him.   He is my hubby's (OK and mine too) favorite cat - I feel awful admitting this, but if anything happened and we didn't have Bump anymore, I don't think we'd feel the same about the other cats.   Of course we wouldn't get rid of them, and we do love them too, but Bumper is our special boy......

It's possible that the original trip to the vet was enough to stress his system and cause the URI.  An URI generally doesn't cause vomiting, in my experience.

Ok thanks - if that is the case - that he developed a URI as a result of stress - will this be transmittable to my other cats?

Should I keep him isolated upon his return home?
