Hi Everyone, I 'm back again from http://www.thecatsite.com/t/304992/kittens-and-litter.

Everyone is doing very well. The kittens are six weeks today and they have discovered that the big people walking around their pen are entertaining and good to have around. Which makes mom jealous because we're supposed to be paying attention to her.

Anyway, because we don't know what vaccinations Minerva has already had, she has to be vaccinated before they spay her. I'm anxious for that to happen because I've seen cats in heat before and it's not going to be pleasant for anyone. I don't want for her to have to go through that again. So, full vaccinations, then spay a few days later. Sounds good, but we have one hitch. Her name is Smaug and she is very reluctant to let go of mom's milk. Her brother and sister happily eating both gruel and the dry food left out for Mama. They very rarely nurse. Smaug, however wants nothing to do with the gruel. All she wants is mom and mom does not want give in. Mom can move in and out of the pen very quickly and does so often. The babies can't yet, so we have mom going into another room so Smaug can't see her, Smaug wailing, and then Ender and Milo insisting the best way to handle this problem is a tackle.

Is there anything I can do help this along? We've tried offering her the gruel several ways, we've prepared it different ways (sometimes thinner or thicker) and we've offered her different flavors (all the same brand). We've put some on her lips and she licks it off but doesn't want it. Same with her paw when she stepped in it. We give Mama run of the house and she's spending a lot of time away from the babies.

Are we doing something wrong? Is there a way to help move this along?Thank you for any advice!

Here's the culprit and her weary Mama.

This is common for one to be resistant.

Sadly she will be forced in to eating herself when she feels starving, she knows how, she sees the others doing it, seen mom eat, she knows, just being a tortie! :)

If it comes down to it she can also be syringe fed until she realizes mom is done and this is what it is now!

That's sweet!

Be sure they all get spayed asap.

You will def. have a pecking order with so many torts!!

Oh, we definitely will. That's why I'm anxious for everyone to wean. Mom's going as soon as she's weaned the babies and had her vaccinations (she was a stray so I don't know if she's had any), the babies will get vaccinations  and then they'll go in.

I think I'm beginning to see a pecking order emerging.  And the little one that's holding up the line is at the top.

Great.

Mom should have an fvrcp vaccine, then her spay.

Kids will need 3 vaccines, I start mine at 8 weeks, then at 11 weeks, then the final at 14 weeks.

One more at 1 year old.

They can be spayed early, of course for my rescue my vets do them at 2 lbs, which is about 9 weeks, but many vets want to wait until they hit 4 months, which is fine too, just don't wait longer than that, you don't want them beginning to get into the sexually mature age, which can start as young as 4 months old.

That wouldn't surprise me at all! The smallest often come out with the feistiest strong personalities. I suppose this is from having to fight to eat since the bigger ones will push them aside.

You will see a much smoother pecking order happen with kittens then bringing in a new cat who is already matured too.

Just an update. We've had everyone in for a visit. Mom's healthy and she got her first set of vaccinations. Babies had 'colds' so we got meds for them, but no vaccinations. They all go back this upcoming week and Mom will get her second set and we'll set up the spay and the babies will get theirs and we'll figure out how soon they'll spay them.

The sweetest thing has happened. The babies can escape their enclosure and do so pretty often. We've kitty proofed and restricted access to places that aren't. Their new freedom means they can explore their pet siblings. Seri is our old lady, she's about 14 years old and she wasn't sure what to think of the kittens until one of them wormed her way under Seri's arm and all of sudden, this happened...
