Mei Li has been having a bad case of Chin Acne . I am having a hard time clearing it up .. We went to the Vet and he gave us   some medicated wipes to clean the area daily .  He said it could possibly be related to diet .  Chemicals , additives and artificial coloring could be a problem . So no more Purina kibble or  canned foods with any of those things ..  I bought  a natural kibble with NO  wheat ,corn , soy , glutens or artificial coloring ..

It is called Victor  ,  the same brand I feed my dgos ... http://www.victordogfood.com/catfood.html#

I will make sure and do a transition to get them used to the new food ..

I just need to find a canned food  .  I will have to do some research I guess ..

Any suggestions ?

It has to be Pate ..

Wow chin acne is usually due to plastic or metal dishes. Also powder from kibble on a wet chin. Flat porcelain plates should cure it along with a dab of peroxide on the chin unless it is an allergy!

I also read on Pet MD that chemicals and artificial coloring could possibly be a culprit ..

My big boy got it once, I was using Deep metal bowl, now I use a flat ceramic plate, with no more reoccurances. I dabbed peroxide on it until it went away

Yeah , I have been washing daily with Peroxide and it is getting better .  I hope with the change to an all natural diet will help too . I will change to ceramic plates for food dishes ..  Thank you ..

My friend feeds on paper plates and tosses at end of day. I knew plastic was bad but so is a deeper metal bowl that I was using (dogs old dish)

Both my cats eat raw in ceramic bowls and one cat has minor acne
It's just black specks right along her lip where it meets the inside of the mouth so I can't use anything other than water to clean it. I pointed it out to the vet a few weeks ago and he wasn't concerned since the acne was minor. I thought the one brand of raw chub I was using was the culprit so I stopped it for awhile and the acne did get a little better. I think some cats are just genetically prone to acne.

Yeah , Mei Li has always had it occasionally but it cleared up right away .  This time  it is not .   My vet gave me some antiseptic wipes and I use those as well as washing with peroxide . It seems to be helping . He said there is no definitive cause for it  but sometimes is diet related ..

One of my feral cats got chin acne when I started them on a Petsmart brand dry food. Can't remember the the name at the moment but it was Turkey and Rabbit. None of them had ever gotten chin acne before but as soon as I stopped that food, it cleared up. They really liked that food though and wish it would have worked out for them.

One of my cats has been battling some bad chin acne. I started wiping her chin down twice a day with Colloidal Silver, 500 PPM  soaked on a cotton ball. Cleared it up within a week. Now i just do it once every day or every other day.

Mei Li would get acne occasionally but this time it is being really stubborn .  I have been feeding mostly Purina kibble and  Friskies Pate  and during that time the acne seems to have worsened .. I don't know for sure if that is due to the ingredients in the foods but I am going to feed only all natural foods and see if that helps ..

Do you add water to make it soupy?
No. It's just one (thawed) NV frozen raw medallion for each meal. I'm not worried about the acne at the moment since it's very minor and isn't bothering my cat. I carefully run a comb along that area to remove the specks and wipe with a damp tissue.

* UPDATE *

Mei Li 's  chin  acne is starting to clear up .   I have taken away the Friskies kibble and replaced with  Victor kibble .  http://www.victordogfood.com/catfood.html#

It is all natural .  No wheat , corn ,soy or added color .. I also bought flat ceramic dishes for feeding ..  I could not find a wet food they would eat

so I went back to Fancy Feast Classic but just  got  the two flavors that have no fish , added color or sodium nitrite  which  are Liver & Chicken  , Turkey & Giblets .

Hopefully this will help . Only time will tell I guess ..

Our Oscar had a wicked case of chin acne awhile back that wouldn't clear up no matter what the vet recommended.  Then one day I got a crazy notion to sprinkle some L-Lysine in his food.  Our other cat with FIV had an upper respiratory infection at the time, and I guess I figured it might help tank up Oscar's immune system a bit so he wouldn't get sick too.  Sorta like kitty vitamin C. ;-)

To our surprise, the chin acne started clearing up within a few days, although I think it took about two weeks for it to completely heal because it was so bad and he had already had it for a couple of months.

Good luck to you and your kitty, and hope you find something that works for y'all. :-)

Thank you .  Yeah , we have L Lysine  .   My problem is getting my cats to eat it .   If I mix it in their wet food they will not eat  ..  They do not care for the treats either .  I am getting them to eat a little by mixing some powder in with a bit of catnip and they at least it some of it .

If it makes you feel any better, Oscar didn't get the full dose either.  At the time (and before we knew any better), he only ate dry food.  So it was more like sprinkling sugar on dry cereal, and we're not really sure how much L-Lysine actually got into him.  But it was enough to do the trick. :-)

I know what you mean though about some cats not wanting to eat L-Lysine, no matter which form you try.  Buddy, our cat with FIV, literally fought us tooth and nail, and he HAS to have it twice a day.  So I started mixing it in with a little dab of canned food that would fit on my finger, and sneaking it in the corner of his mouth when he was half-sleep.  It took me awhile to work out a technique where he didn't put up too much of a fuss, but we manage to get the job done. ;-)

That's really clever of you re: mixing the L-Lysine in with the catnip!  I'll definitely keep that in mind for future reference.
