If the SPCA is a kill shelter, could he be transferred to the Humane Society? Let us know when his adoption notice is posted so we can share and help him find a home!
Will do! They told me if he doesnt get adopted there he might be transferred to a local rescue group. He will be held for 72 hours to wait for his "owner" to come forward and claim him. After that he will go through the adoption procedures. I hope he doesnt have a serious health issue. I will be keeping track of him to make sure he doesn't get killed off. If it comes to that then ill take him in myself, at least temporarily.

I had a neighbor's cat who moved away about 20 years ago. He was an orange tabby and was very tough and incredibly strong...he was also very friendly. When I got married we were going to move "Stinky" (he always smelled a little...a great cat but a little smelly for some unknown reason) to my home, but he would NOT go into the carrier. I tried to push him in but it was like a cartoon, with all 4 feet back pedaling like crazy...eventually I was exhausted and gave up. The next time I did this I covered him like before, but then put the carrier behind him and tried to push him forward. He immediately began to back pedal again...but this time he went right into the carrier. It worked out very well and Stinky went on to live a long and healthy life. He has been gone for a while now, but his spirit remains!

Update! I called them again to check on him and got a good update. He doesnt have any serious diseases. He was already neutered and is even microchipped! So they contacted the owner n they have 10 days from yesterday to claim him.

Haha what a clever way to trick him into the carrier!

Did you take him to Dallas animal services on 30 and westmoreland? That's the city shelter.
The SPCA is next to them, but they do not accept strays, so it isn't them he went to....
Do you know his ID number at the shelter? Or his name?
Is this him: http://www.petharbor.com/pet.asp?uaid=DLLS.A910124

Theres a sweet orange tabby boy at my apartment complex. I suspect he might be the father to a 3 day old kitten i previously found. When i first saw him he was chunky and friendly and not neutered. So i assumed he has a loving owner nearby. I gave him a few pats and went along. Few weeks later i saw that he had lost sooo much weight!! So much so that his skin looks saggy on his belly. This rapid weight loss concerned me. I fed him a couple of times over the next few days. I noticed he likes to hang out nearby a certain set of bushes and someone had been feeding him since there were a few empty cans around. But i noticed i dont see new cans everyday so im thinking he doesnt get fed everyday. I easily lured him into my apt so that he knows where i live in case hes ever feeling hungry. I kept my own boy away from him. The orange tabby meowed to get out and so i let him out. He layed down for a few minutes in front of my windows. Hes a sweet boy and i want him to be loved healthy and safe. Whats the best course of action? I was thinking of keep feeding him and observing his health but i dont know what else to do.
This is the exact scenario I have seen over and over with my neighbors. They will get a kitten and keep it in the house until it becomes sexually mature and then instead of paying for a spay/neuter toss it outside. They look pretty good the first month or so but given time if they survive they look worse than a starving feral. I used to spend up of 30-40 a week on their herd of ever growing starving cats.

In fact we were mocked when we took in our first kitten. They proudly told us that we'd get sick of her and put her outside just like they did. So we named her Kitten so she would never grow up.

Thank you for giving him a meal and a chance at finding a home with humans that will care for him.

Yes that's him! Great investigative skills. He is at 1818 north westmoreland at the lost and found center. Right next door there is also an adoption center. But i dont think they will keep him long there. Were you interested in adopting him if his owner doesnt respond?

I work at the SPCA and do transfers from other shelters to take out to pets mart. And I hadnt seen him. People get us and dallas animal services confused a lot because we are so close.
He looks nice...they do keep them in that adoption center for a while and they also work with rescues/other shelters. He won't be a available until after his 10 day hold, and then he may move to the adoption floor or rescue. They also have a petsmart they take animals to as well!!

I dont know the differences between all these animal departments either. But thank you for all that you do! And yes hes a pretty nice cat and seems mellow. If the kitten i rescued gets adopted while im out of town then im going to adopt the orange tabby boy.

Time has dulled how rough it was hand raising Kitten. And five years later repeating the experience with BabyMook.

The weeks of two hour naps. Looking like you are either a cutter or don't know which end of the weed whacker to hold.

The bottle feeding, the butt wiping the eventual disposable cake pan turned litterbox every 10 feet in the house. Checking the heater constantly , washing teeny tiny bottles constantly. Being their whole world and hoping she stayed asleep in your purse/pocket when you had no choice but to take her. I have no regrets. There are two would have been ferals in my home. And truthfully I don't understand how anyone even getting a weaned kitten could raise them with all that baby love they give and then open a door and say good luck.

Kitten started out as a solid gray ugly little bugger. And she morphed into this blue cream tortie before our eyes. But it wouldn't have mattered if she'd stayed ugly or even the boy we deemed her to be because within a day we seen nothing but beauty.

I hope the owners of this cat are looking for him. If the worst ever happened I hope its someone like you who might find my babies and make sure they got to the right place.

I'm out of the rescue business. I have simply lost faith in humans. you offer hope  A lot of people here do.

Yes bottle feeding kittens is a full time job!  That's why when I found a closed eyed kitten in my apartment parking lot I ended up taking her to a no kill shelter.  I knew I just wouldn't be able to pull it off since I have a full time office job.  I'm currently waiting for her to grow up and be ready for adoption.  I don't know, some people just don't have any commitment to their animals and it's really disheartening because they are alive and not just stuffed animals to be tossed aside.  So I understand when you say you lost faith in humans.  Thank you for the compliment.  I don't know how it happened but within the last 2 months I managed to rescue 3 cats from my apartment complex.  I haven't seen any other cats around so far.

Wow, I'm really surprised that the owner didn't claim him! Were they actually able to get in contact with the owner or was the microchip not up to date and registered?

Im not sure if they talked to the owners live on the phone but they said they contacted the owner but they never replied. Hes only 2.7 years old so it cant be that out of date?

I loves the happy endings.
Although he doesnt know it yet! My resident cat is making him angry by making noises at the door and sticking his paw underneath. Had to cover up the space with a towel. And i just bought a plug in to help calm him.

Every time I bring a new cat home and keep them in a separate room, I can count on the Kitty's playing the "paws under the door game". I think it actually helps them get acquainted to some degree since they can see and smell the new cat without having to deal with him face to face, until they kind of get used to each other. Nemo is quite the handsome cat!!

Aww, I'm so glad Nemo has a new home. Here's an article that might help with the introductions.

Let us know how it goes.

Oh my resident cat is such a sweetie. I think he will be fine. Nemos the more difficult one because he was a lone stray for a while so hes not as trusting of other males...

Thank you for the article! Will read it. Am a little nervous because i never took in an adult cat before.

This will be my log...i have never taken in an adult cat before so need some encouragement because i am a bit discouraged. I know everything im going through is fine ans normal but cant help it. Im stepping into intermediate level cat ownership! Hes staying in my bedroom with a feliway plugin. We are on night two.

Pros:
1. He will purr when i pet him once a day!
2. He comes to me here and there.

Cons:
1. Doesnt have much of an appetite. He has always been this way.
2. Hisses easily as he is getting used to indoor noises.
3. Not interested in play.
4. Found out the hard way that he HATES it when i put stuff right next to him. Makes me wonder if he has been hit before.
5. Kind of unpredictable personality. Feel like i can easily offend him.

Ive never taken in an animal that didn't trust me before. This is certainly different.

How he likes to spend most of his time:

I've had a few adult cats dropped into my lap, and all of them have had happy endings. Adult cats are different because they are typically set in their ways, and cats thrive on routine. It will take a while for him, and you, to learn who is the boss...and there will be times that you will feel like whacking him when he does something mean or unfriendly. This is his way of adjusting to his new environment where everything is different than it was just a short while ago. It will take him a while to get comfortable and quit jumping at every noise. While this sounds like a long list of not so good things, once he feels at home he will bond with you strongly, as it's my opinion and experience that older cats (3-4 and older) seem to bond better with people, while younger cats are still acting like kids. Depending on your intentions, you might want to put a blanket or thick towel on the back of a large chair so he can sit and hang out near where you sit. As for feeding him, try a few different brands and flavors/textures. You will find that adult cats are usually real picky about their food and you will probably drive yourself crazy trying to find the one type that he likes...only to have him change his preference after a few days.

I think you will really enjoy your new addition. Adult cats don't play as much as young cats, but they don't knock everything off of the shelf and table as much either! It will take a while to learn each others habits, but cats seem to recognize when someone kind of saves their furry butt and will repay it in their own cat way. I wish the two of you the best...please keep us up to date with your new little buddy. FWIW, I haven't seen a cat yet that can't resist a laser pointer. A playing cat is a happy cat, so get a pointer if you can find one cheap!

Jim
