Sorry, the appointment is tomorrow. fluids are seeming to help her and she's perking up. It's a roller coaster.

Hope all is well.....  I have been waiting for an update on Chelsea.  Is she continuing to improve on the fluids or will she have the surgery?

The vet decided to reduce the medications. My friend indicated she doesn't want to put her 16 year old through surgery and they decided on a plan to stop giving her the numerous medications but more fluids as support. This has been a long long battle. Last night Chelsea woke her up wanting to play. I think that's a really good sign my friend is being cautious. Sometimes lots of medications is not the answer for this condition I suspect there may be a stress component.

How is Chelsea today?  Yes, it certainly WAS a good sign that Chelsea woke up your friend and wanted to play!  Is she still showing improvement on the fluids?  What medications have been stopped?  I'm not sure if stopping everything is the answer.  I understand how important fluids are to ensure proper hydration but that alone might not be enough for Chelsea.  What exactly did the vet say?  How is Chelsea's appetite?  Is she on a special diet?  I'm sorry about all the questions!  I'm just hoping for the best for this kitty.....

She is on the miralax and the fluids as well as a reduced dose of Cisapride. She was on antibiotics and anti infalammatories as well. That was cut out. She seems to only like dry food so she's eating wet food mixed with the dry. She seems to be turning around.

I am SO happy to hear that Chelsea is doing well!  I am relieved to know that she will continue to be given the Miralax and Cisapride.  These medications have really made a BIG difference for my cat who has been dealing with megacolon for the past 8 years.  How is Chelsea given the Miralax?  Is it mixed in her food or syringed with water in her mouth?  I have to give my Spyder his Miralax by syringe because I have 4 other kitties!  His Cisapride dose is one 5mg capsule twice a day.  He is doing very well with this and I hope he continues to do so!  I don't blame your friend for not wanting to risk surgery for Chelsea at her age.  I felt the same way about my cat and would proceed with it only if there was no other way to save his life.  Thankfully, the medication is working!  I hope that Chelsea continues to improve and I look forward to updates about her progress!

Yes she's improving now everyday with fluids. I think that's the trick when they get In trouble with this condition.

Hi, I am new to the site and have a tuxedo male cat named Scooter. He has been diagnosed with maga colon for right at a year. After figuring out what combo of meds worked best for the condition, which is cisapride and miralax, he has done well. BUT, one day I got a new bottle and after starting that bottle, I noticed he was not doing well. I called the pharmacy and they compounded a new bottle, but still the same result was occurring, which was no bowel movement. The vet said that the next option was the surgery, but something kept eating at me and I decided to call the pharmacy again and request it be transferred to a new pharmacy who could compound it. The new pharmacy compounded the drug, I rushed home and gave him a normal dose and within 2 hours he had a bowel movement and for that entire bottle of meds, he went 2x a day and was back to the cat that he was prior to any issues!!! It was awesome and the stress level greatly decreased for me, because he felt better and he also started using his litter box without fail. ( he had used the rug when he was finally able to go on the prior bottle that was not working). When it was time to refill the med, I called the pharmacist and raved at how he was doing and thanked him. I picked up a new bottle and he has not gone since now. 4 days!!! I called and asked if anything was done differently and was told no. I requested a new bottle be compounded and to the expense went and picked up another brand new bottle..... It still is not working. Has anyone had this happen? Please offer suggestions, because they are going to think I am crazy and I need my boy back to feeling and going.
