I found this kitten in the woods. I don't know if it was dumped or a feral. It was terrified when I caught it . I have been keeping it in the bathroom with food and litter. The first 3 days it stayed hunkered down in a box and was wild eyed and scared. But the 3rd day it started to warm up and get blinky eyed and fall asleep while I was in the room. Then it got out of its' box, walked around my feet sniffing and meowing. By that evening it was playing with a toy and scampering around. It is still scared of our hands and I haven't picked it up or petted it. It will spit and hiss if we get our hands near it. But otherwise it will meow like it wants attention and scoot around the room. I am unsure whether to get some gloves and just scoop it up and hold/pet or let it keep coming on it's own terms. I am guessing it's about 5-6 weeks. It's eyes are starting to turn color but not fully. it's really little but has teeth and eats. It eats soft food and kitten milk from a dish but doesnt' seem to eat or like the crunchy food I gave it, even the softened kitten crunchies. It's using the litter and has been from day one.

What should I do next? Should I attempt picking it up with gloves and wrapping in a towel even though it hisses and spits or just wait on it.

Also I know it has to have fleas because it's been scratching at itself. I don't know what to do about that. I can't really bathe it till it's more tame and don't want to terrify it further.

Thanks for any tips.
We are hoping to keep this little one.

I'd leave the gloves off. Let the kitten come to you. It sounds like you're making good progress right now.

Come into the room, sit down and talk soothingly to the kitten, often, and leave a nice treat when you leave. It probably won't take long to have a tamed kitty.

You could try sprinkling flea powder in the kitten's box, but unless someone else has a better idea, you might have to just wait on the fleas. Rough handling at this point is detrimental.

The first step should be a visit to the vet.  The cat needs to be assessed for parasites and disease and to also give you a basis of age.  You do not want to deal with worms.

Since the kitten is quite young, socializing shouldn't be too difficult yet you do need patience.  Please no gloves.  Just sit on the floor with the kitten.  It's best not to loom over him/her.  Just allow the kitten to come to you.  Here is a great video with some awesome tips.  Yet please do schedule a vet appointment.

The video begins with the rescue of the kittens, but continues to the socialization process.  Thank you for rescuing this kitten and wanting to help.

Sounds like you are making nice progress and I suggest just giving it time.  We are currently caring for a kitten born to a stray/feral mom who we took in when she was pregnant.  He is about the same age, and despit being handled since birth, he still hisses, spits and hides from us too.... he is such a little scamp!
