My kitten Pickles threw up a roundworm this morning.  It was huge and disgusting.  I guess the first round of deworming didn't fully take!  And now I know why she's been having a hard time gaining weight.

I have already called the vet and I'm picking up more deworming medication for both kittens.  Just wondering if there is anything else I need to do to prevent the worms from returning or spreading to my family.  I already flushed the offending worm.

It's very common for cats to need a second and even a third dose of deworming meds to completely get rid of the worms due to the life cycle of the parasites.  If it was extremely large, keep an eye on her as those can cause constipation and blockages when the kitty tries to pass them.

This worm was just over 2 inches long.  At first I thought it was a rubber band she had found on the ground and tried to eat (I do try to be very careful to pick up any rubber band I find).  But when I picked it up it began to twist and curl.  You can imagine how I freaked out!!  Blech.  Can't wash my hands enough....

I just don't want my kids to get worms.  Or me.  Yuck.

I had a kitten get very sick from them. Just be prepared for them to be dead in the litterbox after another deworming. Just dispose of the litter in a plastic bag and seal it and wash your hands well and there shouldn't be any issues with your family.

Thank you.

Pickles was kind of not herself today after throwing up.  Nothing too obvious but not eating as much and just wanting to cuddle more.  She ate this evening so hoping she feels better soon.

Poor baby!  Hope she's back to herself soon.  Keep an eye on her and get her to the vet if she stays "off".

When a cat vomits a roundworm, you can believe they are fully infested with worms, and MUST be retreated every 2 weeks SEVERAL times, or you will be wasting your time and risking his health.

Once or even twice doesn't cut it at this point.

You will need at least several rounds of treatment to fully remove the adult worms and any larvae that may not be affected by the medicine. Talk to your vet about proper dosing and using a monthly parasite preventative once the roundworms are completely gone.
