Hi there,

I recently lost my two bengals.  One from health issues and the other got out the door.  Neither of them were overweight, even though their bowls were always full.

Yesterday, I adopted a pair of adults.  One is very overweight.  Their previous owner fed them twice a day.

Do you think free-choice food is an option for these cats?  I'm hoping that once they realize food is always available, they won't feel the need to eat the whole bowl as quickly possible.  So far, it's working.  The bowls haven't gone down any more than they would have with my previous two, but maybe it's too soon to tell.  Although they seem relaxed, I'm sure they still need time to settle.

My dad suggested that they girl may have a belly full of worms.  I doubt it as they were indoor cats (bengals again), but I guess it's possible.  Shall I worm then anyways?

Thanks in advance for you opinions.

Free feed is not an option for the overweight one.  Put them on a canned food diet, preferably grain-free, and do scheduled feedings.  If you feed dry, feed a measured amount of a quality grain-free food.

Are these cats Bengals or domestic short/long haired cats?

Definitely get them to the vet for a meet & greet with the vet and a check on the stool for parasites.

Darn...I was hoping for a different answer about the food.  Oh well:)

Good idea about the vet.

They are bengals.

I second the timed canned food feelings! I adopted an obese cat and he's now down to a normal weight. His previous owner free fed him dry food and I meal feed him wet food.

Bengals need lots and lots of protein, preferably a grain-free food, and lots and lots of interaction and exercise to thrive.  We have (had?) a member who was a breeder, @Kai Bengals who could probably help you with weight loss tips for your new bengal.  I'm not sure if she posts here any more or not, though.
