Apple season is in 'full swing' here. i live in a rural agricultural area in which there are many (many) apple orchards, so this time of year i see truck after truck stacked high with crates full of apples being moved to storage. there are just about as many trucks moving the crates off to the stores. there are other crops being harvested too, both fruit and vegetable crops, though apples are the 'big' crop in my area. towards the end of the apple harvesting here (the third weekend in september), the closest town to me puts on the annual 'Harvest Fest'.

so with these thoughts on my mind, for today's Question of the Day --

Are there any seasonal events (fairs, carnivals, festivals, sporting events or contests, etc) in your area this time of year?

i'll start!

Harvest Fest here has vendors (75 vendors is the limit, as the town is small), festival type food, a 5k walk or run, arts & crafts, farmer's market, huge pumpkins, and of course the 'pumpkin droppin' -- where a man way up high (75 feet high) on a 'lift cage' using a crane drops pumpkins down onto the road below, kids and adults do a count down for each pumpkin drop. there's also pumpkin, apple, and watermelon carving, hay rides, as well as other activities.

when i lived in the city of Rochester, NY, i would attend the Clothesline Festival -- http://mag.rochester.edu/events/clothesline-festival/ . i enjoyed the Clothesline Festival very much.

okay, now it's your turn!

We have Harvest Fest coming up next month but unfortunately it's on the day of my son's 1st birthday party so we can't go. They give out free pumpkins and there's events for the kids.

There's a huge fair called the Canadian National Exhibition not too far from here. We went 2 weeks ago and it was fun but extremely expensive.

This weekend was the Garden State Sheep Breeders Sheep and Fiber show. All kinds of sheep, competitive classes, shearing demonstrations, sheep dog herding demonstrations. More fleece and yarn for sale than you could believe, two huge building full.

And last weekend there was a plowing competition with draft horses from New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Both events repeat every year at these same times.

I have two entries on my web site with really nice pictures but I think I'm not allowed to put in links. Is that right? If you do want to see them use my BelleWood Gardens link at the bottom here.

This is a wine-growing region, so there are a lot of wine-tasting events this time of year. There's also the Cannstatter Volksfest, second only to Munich's famous Oktoberfest.

Our little town (population just over 9,300) holds an open-air flea market every October which is quite a draw, even attracting some guests from out of state or Switzerland or France.

One of the local farm/orchards has a festival for every season pretty much.  It's great fun and my kids have learned to expect to go!

This time of year we go there to apple pick and then into the festival grounds.  If we wait a few weeks we can pick both apples and pumpkins.  The festival has a ton of attractions for kids.  Everything from pony rides to a giant hay-bale slide, a corn pit for the kids to jump in, a kids and full size corn maze, face painting, live music and of course food!  There are so many things the kids can do.  They also have a shop where they sell everything from the fruit and produce to cider (apple cider slushies are AMAZING!!) to home made ice cream, jams, jellies, syrup and some Amish baked goods.  But the crowning glory are the apple cider donuts.  They sell them so fast they are still hot when you get them.  I do believe it's a few of the local Amish women who work there that make those.  I always get my apples for Thanksgiving and Christmas at this orchard.  They have the best variety!

We had our firemen's carnival last month. My sister's community has a neat Community Day, complete with flea markets, produce and bakery sale items, and the firemen do a great BBQ chicken dinner to raise money....that was last month, too. Not much going on this month at all. In our area, everything is much earlier.

oh, i love those chicken bbq's the firemen do! usually all the volunteer fire departments in my general area put on a parade of emergency vehicles sometime during the summer months, and they drive from town to village to hamlet with their lights on and sirens going. but this year our local fire department hasn't done anything like that.

Yes, it's massive. My kids loved it. They have Aimee's favourite kids group playing twice a day so she got to see them and was so excited.

There are a lot of firemen who are good cooks, not fancy food just homey food.  They get a lot of practice at the fire house.  I live real close to the fire station and a large supermarket.  Every so often I see the firemen in there getting their supplies for meals.

just doing a quick online search, i found mention of quite a few fire department cooking competitions and cooking contests in which fire departments were entered.
