I rescued a kitten and the Vet says she has mites, round worm and still needs to be tested for leukemia. She can't be introduced to my older cat for almost 2 months! I have her in a bedroom and she is comfortable, but In afraid this isolation will change her sweet, calming, personality. We go in the room and play with her, but a lot of the time she's by herself. Will this be traumatic for her? Just wondering if anyone else had to do this with a new kitten.

Aww, sweet little girl. Thank you for rescuing her. As long as you go and visit her daily she'll be OK on her own. She looks like she has some toys to play with. Do you have a cat tree or something she can climb on? A view out of the window? Cats sleep a lot anyway, so being on her own for part of the day won't do her any harm.

When can you get her blood tests done? I recommend getting them done as soon as possible, just so you know what you are dealing with. Has your other cat been vaccinated? If not make sure you wash your hands before and after handling the new kitten. FIV is transmitted through deep tissue bites, so it's very unlikely that this will be passed from one cat to the other, but leukemia can be passed by sneezing or grooming. You need to be more careful about that.

Thanks for replying to my question. She did have a blood test and tested negative, how ever the Vet thinks she's around 7-8 weeks old and will need to be retested at 12 weeks to be sure. She will be getting her shots in 3 weeks. She was tested for both the feline aids and lukemea. I love the idea about getting a cat tree! She is such a sweet little girl! It seems like her life has been a little tough so far! Just want the best for her!

I brought a stray/feral cat into my home 2 years ago.  He spent the first 2.5-3 months in a room of his own.  I had another cat and a large dog.  I also had to deal with him getting to the vet for shots and tests.  He then tested positive for Bartonella (Cat Scratch Fever) and had to be on antibiotics for 28 days.  He enjoyed his room and I made it as comfy as possible for him.  He had a large window with a cat tree and enjoyed looking outside.  I visited him many many times each day.

I think as long as you visit her a lot, bring her yummy treats and food/water she will be fine.  It will also give you a chance to bond with her and allow her time to adjust to your home.  You other cat will smell her and this is a good first step.

Thanks for the suggestions! I did get a cat tree and she seems to like it! I'm feeling a lot better about the situation

She's adorable. I'm glad her first blood tests were negative, fingers crossed for more negative tests next time.

Several of ours had to be quarantined as well but it was due to being positive for coccidia. This was a rigorous quarentine and cleanup situation as that is so highly contagious. There were at least 2 in isolation at he same time and because of how difficult it is to eliminate coccidia from the environment our vet advised us not to isolate them to a specific room in he house. Instead we were advised to quarentine them in large cages in a separate room. So I invested in two large dog training crate cages and put them in my laundry room. Two little jail cells one on top of the other and at least three of our cats had to be confined here for almost a month. They hated it and cried but I would go in and spend hours at a time focusing my attention on them each time they needed to have a new litter pan or food or medication. I'm happy to report that despite these periods of quarentine their loving dispositions were unchanged and they get along famously with all the other kittens. We gave them a few small toys but everything had to be disposable (disposable scratching toys, balls, cage liners and blankets, bowls and litter pans). Everything had to be thrown away because it's so hard to kill coccidia and the risk of re infection is high. That wasn't a risk we wanted to take. Our cages have been cleaned and stand empty now in case of emergency. They've all been out for a couple months now. We call it kitty jail, the infirmary, the hole :)

Wow! That is a lot of work! I'm glad the kitties are all better! I'm very relieved to hear that this experience didn't change their personalities! This gives me hope!

I'm sure she will be just fine! Let us know how her test turns out and how she is doing.

Good news Miss Lola is allowed out of the room and is exploring and getting to know her big brother Cole! It's been a long process but I'm so glad I rescued Lola and she is part of our family!

Yay! It's so nice when they can all be together! We recently took in another kitty and went through the same process. He just came out of quarentine yesterday and the introductions haven't been quite as smooth this time but with the help of a little catnip we are making progress!
