Hello

I had given my cat a flea spray and that i dried it off him by rubbing. It says spray it off him but what would be the affect of it? And I am assuming he may have licked a little would he have gotten sick from that?

And as the general about fleas we have tried everything, we have done flea spray, a flea collar (which he is still wearing), we did the flea thing in his neck, then we have sprayed him with apple cider vinegar and they keep coming back. But this is really bad. Now we have tired a lot, and my legs are suffering all got really bad red blots from all the bites.

What do you do?

And how does it work?

The vomiting may be from the flea spray. For bad reactions to flea products, vets advise washing the cat with warm water and Dawn dish soap, followed by a very thorough rinse to remove all traces of the soap. Dry him off well so he doesn't catch a chill. He should be noticeably improved by tomorrow, but if not, a trip to the vet will be necessary for an assessment. If the kitty will eat, give him canned cat food with a little water mixed in to help him rehydrate. I hope he feels better soon!

Over the counter flea products are at best completely ineffective and at worst lethal. The only exceptions to that are Advantage and Frontline, and that is because both used to only be available by prescription.

Natural remedies are just not strong enough to kill fleas or remove the thousands of flea eggs laid all over your house. Things like food-grade diatomaceous earth can help remove fleas and eggs from the carpet, but will not complete the job. Fleas are tenacious, hardy little boogers that will probably survive the apocalypse.

The only way to completely rid your pet and home of fleas is to use Advantage for 2-3 months, or visit your vet for one of the newer prescription flea meds such as Capstar or Revolution. Advantage and Frontline are effective in different areas, so it is a good idea to call a local cat or dog rescue to ask which one works in your area. These meds not only kill fleas quickly, they also interrupt the life cycle of the fleas and prevent them from laying more eggs.

Please Google any over the counter flea medication you may consider buying for consumer reviews. The knock-off brands like Sentry and products made by Hartz and Sargeants are highly toxic and can cause paralysis, renal failure, seizures, neurological damage and chemical burns. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of heartbreaking reports from pet owners who have watched their pet suffer after using these products. They need to be pulled from the market.

The general consensus on this site is that flea collars are useless and potentially harmful and should be avoided as well.
