Hello all, it's catmommy22322! I am sitting on concrete in a parking lot typing this in hopes of rescuing a stray male kitty. My boyfriend called me after work today saying he saw a stray kitty running around in the woods behind his work and it looked like it's tail was gone. Well cat lover that I am, grabbed some canned food and tuna and off I go. When I pulled up I got a look at the beautiful cat and it's a tuxedo color. It's poor tail is completely gone, clean cut up to Where a tail usually starts (or ends. Above its testicles) it is clearly a male, it's testicles has dropped but he is small. I am guessing 6 months.
I opened some food and it came near the food and started eating but would not let me get close enough to touch him. I can tell he is in pain.
I am not certain if male cats are harder to rehab and take care of from being a stray but I wanted to give it a shot. Any advice on catching him etc.
thanks everyone!

The injury means you can't wait to gain his trust and catch him that way. What you need is a humane trap, which you should be able to borrow or rent from a local shelter or rescue. They should show you how and where to set it up. :cross:

Male vs. female shouldn't really make much of a difference - it's more a question of personality and often age (the younger the better, but many adult ferals can still be socialized). He might turn out to be a frightened stray rather than a true feral anyway.

How its going?  If he doens voluntary lets himself be enticed in a carrier, or taken perhaps by wrapping a towel around him - perhaps even including head, you must use a human trap as advised earlier.

Is the damage on the tail fresh?  Or has it healed?

The advantage of helping a wounded or sick semi-ferale cat, is, if he survives, the socializing goes much quicker.  Sometimes surprising quick and easy...

Anyway, he is young, and should  be still fairly easy to foster, with time, love and patience...   Im not saying easy pieasy as a cake, but still, nothing difficult for a dedicated person.

Yep, you will probably need to trap the poor little fellow. He surely needs help and a home. Looks very young too.

Hope you can get him soon. He's currently kiving a sad little life. Let us know how it's going.

I'm so frustrated. I have called all rescues around here and they either said they don't want to help because it will cost too much to help and repair his wound, that if a shelter gets a hold of him he will be put down, or that I have to pay $80 just to rent the dang cage for a day, which at this moment I don't have. I just started new jobs and pay day isn't till Wednesday.
I was going to give animal control a call, but I was talking with the shelter that is paired with the animal control and that the shelter is so overrun with cats and kitties now, if the cat isn't automatically adoptable they put it dowN.
I'm at a lost at what to do. I'm just feeding it and hoping I can't gain his trust soon and take him into a vet myself and get him helped. If only I had all the money in the world

Try putting his food in the back of a pet carrier and sit nearby. If he goes in you can quickly close the door. Then I guess you'll have to take him to your vet to save him. Poor little guy. I hope he'll go in for you.

Poor kitty!  Have you tried contacting a feral cat group in your area?  They might be willing to help you humanely trap the little guy, even if they won't take him as a "rescue".  If they can do that you trap him, many vets are willing to help with stray animals who have been injured.  Another random thought....could you contact a local TV station and explain the situation and let them know you want to help this little guy who has been abused,  but can't get anyone to help you--if they run a human interest story on the local news you might get some offers of help--at least it's worth a shot.  You could do the same thing with a local radio station.  One other thought, you might try contacting Alley Cat Allies (alleycatallies.org)--I'm  not sure what help they can offer, but they may be able to direct you to people or groups in your area that do TNR and might be willing to help.

I sure wish I could do more to help...I know I'd be doing exactly what you are to help this little guy.  Let's hope there is someone out there that can help you.  I'll keep sending positive thoughts in your direction and hope for the very best outcome.

Hi dear, you are to be commended on trying to help a feral ..Most of us in the tnr program

do go out to help a person with your type of problem .however some groups are not willing to

lose their cages .that is y they charge 4x the amount to borrow it .. if you can get to a feed

store or a harbor freight store you can get your own cage for $15-25  .. if you decide to do that

you cant sit around to wait for them to go into the cage , the best time to set the cage is @ night

and PEOPLE TUNA is the best food to put in the trap. check it in the morning .I have been a member

of a tnr group .for over 7 years.

.are you even sure he has an issue with his tail .he may be a bobtail kitten

anyway if you catch him to tame him you will need to keep hm in a kennel for a few days while

communicating with him .. it gets easier by the day if he feels the love and affection .. I have 9 strays

that were feral when I trapped them, I  had them fixed, and now they are part of my cat colony..hope

to see an update soon

A happy ending to this story! I kept going back to the site leaving food for him and I finally got a trap. I kept coming back to check and nothing for days. Finally one aftenon I came to check the spot in the woods and a man from the trucking company that is in front of the woods stopped me and asked what I was doing. I let him know and he asked me if it was the same cat with its tail missing. I said yes! Well come to find out, his buddy had a cage and trapped the baby the afternoon I was running around trying to find my own cage! They got him to a vet and are adopting him as their oWn. I was so happy to hear such a good ending for the wonderful cat. Thank you all for your help! I purchased my own trap so if I ever come across this situation again I'll be prepared.
Love to all those on this site. Yall are just gems and huge help to all. [emoji]128149[/emoji]

Let us know how your other babies are doing on your other thread when you get the chance :).

SOOOOO.....happy to hear that there's a happy ending.   As I've said before, thank you for caring enough to go the extra mile(s) to save this cat...and how wonderful that someone was ready to adopt him.  You are my hero!
