My friend's cat started having her kittens at 1 am this morning and has had only the 1 kitten.  She still has several inside her.  Is it pretty normal for the mama cat to have kittens this far apart?  She is eating food and drinking water and currently is laying down outside in the shade on the back porch and the door is open in case she needs to come in to tend to the little one.  She is not straining or in any discomfort or distress at this time.

It is normal for cats to have pauses in labor which can be hours or even days, but she needs to be inside nursing her baby. Can you bring her in and not let her back out? Kittens need their mother's body heat to stay warm as they cannot regulate their own body temperature the first three weeks. They also need to nurse frequently. It is not wise for her to be outside right now.

I did bring her in and put her inside the basket with the baby but she jumped back out and ignored he baby.  I put them both in the bedroom and shut the door because of the 2 dogs we also have.  I have been feeding it kitten milk formula but unfortunately the kitten did not make it.  She was cold and she passed away.

Im sorry to hear this...

How was the kitten looking? Well done, hairy, decently rounded, or almost hairless, scrawny as new hatched birdling?

If it was premature, its always a fight uphill, even if its alive and survives the first minutes...
