Maybe you guys can help my 5-year old indoor cat, Grandpaws? He’s a very small size built cat, only weighs 5 pounds, and is very skinny and lethargic, his coat isn’t shiny at all and has dandruff.
He was adopted from a large group of other indoor cats and noticed that he was on dry Purina Cat Chow. We’re pretty confident he’s been on this his entire life. It doesn't seem like he's been getting the proper nutrients he should have been getting.
He lets out a couple of cries right before needing to use the litterbox and goes and has gas and diarrhea, and only cries during this time. It's never solid. He’s made just a few messes on the carpet, but he’s been good making it to the littlerbox. We’re not sure how long he’s had it. There is rarely vomiting.
So we took him to the vet and he did an ultrasound and diagnosed IBD, affecting his small intestines. He also did blood work and didn’t see anything serious. He said his organs a very small, but look normal. He wanted his condition improved by diet , to put him on a novel protein he’s never had before and is not poultry (we decided on fish) and also prescribed Predisone 10 mg tablet once a day and also liquid Flagyl twice a day and to let him know if there has been any improvement. He also recommended their Science Hill food, which we declined.
We have switched him to wet canned grain-free twice a day (morning and night), currently giving him Taste of the Wild food (Canyon River Fish) , no more dry at all. We’ve also been giving him a small amount of the 100% pure pumpkin (1 tsp) and 1 tsp of Nutri-Cal each meal.
It’s been two weeks and there is no improvement in his symptoms, still lethargic and has diarrhea
We know there is a lot of products out there and probiotics might help. As another measure, we’ve just ordered from Vitality Science (www.vitalityscience.com) , they sell a 3-step product and we’re hoping that it helps (TR Diarrhea and Vomiting). We want to start administering this when we receive it. They’re highly rated from everyone here on the forum J , have a 97% success rate and have a 90 day money-back guarantee . His condition could be ALOT worse and we’re confident it will help. If it doesn’t work, we’ll just return it, no biggie .
I’ve been doing a lot of reading on IBD and don’t want to do anything wrong. Are we adding to the problem or doing everything correct?
What does everyone think? Are we not waiting long enough for the Prednisone to do what it’s supposed to do and the diet change? Should we start weaning him off the Prednisone to 5mg then to 0 mg before we start giving him the new Vitality Science items, or administer them at the same time? I don’t want to change too much too soon. I prefer going the holistic route.
We just want our cat to be better.
