I got The Jarrow 250 mg capsules. tried to give last night, starting with 125 mg twice a day. My cat gets free eating of dry food and a small amount of wet AM and PM. He is inconsistent with eating all of his wet food. He has most of his teeth missing due to having them pulled several years ago due to stomatitis (before I adopted him). I know many of you just sprinkle it on your cat's food. I have already been giving Oliver: Famciclovir 1/4 of a  250 mg tablet, once a day, in a pill pocket; which works really well. I thought I'd just pour half a capsule of the Lactoferrin into a pill pocket and give it that way...WRONG. I didn't realize it was such a massive amount of fine powder in the capsule. So now having to rethink how I'm going to do this. I've never tried to give him pills down his throat. Don't trust that he'd get the whole amount of Lactoferrin by sprinkling it on his food. I also got some Lysine, but thought I'd not start them at the same time, and would go straight to the Lactoferrin and see what it does. He is a chronic. He has been on Famciclovir in the past prior to my adopting him, with good results, but wasn't on it when I got him. He's been on the Famciclovir for 2 months, with some improvement, which is probably reasonable for the amount of time he's been on it. He has drainage from both eyes, sometimes discolored, although, mostly clear since he's been on the Famciclovir, and nose is congested, see some dark dried stuff at edge of nare frequently; he sneezes, he also has a lot of clear mucous/secretions in his mouth, I see him swallowing, or he drools. Possibly due to teeth loss?

I am able to mix the Lysine and the Jarrow Lactoferrin right into my Perla's canned Fancy Feast. IF she doesn't finish it, which is usual, then she takes very, very well to my syringe feeding her the rest. :rolleyes: YES - she is a princess - the princess of all of the princesses. :worship: :lol3: This way I know she has gotten her full dose. She is used to this routine. I actually stopped giving her the Lactoferrin and Lysine a few months back and then she flared. Now her right eye is having problems along with the weepy left eye. :sigh: I started her back on the two supplements, also recommended by her eye specialist.

Check out this thread too. http://www.thecatsite.com/t/267703/stubborn-herpes-infection-add-lactoferrin-in-addition-to-lysine

Perla is going back to the specialist in a couple of weeks for a check-up. She is on Oflaxin drops for her right eye at the moment. She has also been a regular patient of having to take Famvir too. Herpes is just the pits. :shame:

:vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes: for your Oliver.

Since the Lactoferrin is supposed to taste pretty good, I wonder if you could mix it with a little Cat Milk and just let your guy drink it, or then mix THAT in a tiny bit of wet food to make sure he gets it?.  Not sure if it dissolves nicely or not
.

I give all my cats probiotics and powdered egg yolk lecithin, and I actually dissolve them in a little water first, before mixing them into their wet food, otherwise ONE of my pickies won't eat his food, possibly because of the texture?  Who knows?  But as long as it's dissolved first, he'll eat it.

My BEAR would be next to impossible to pill without serious injury.  Even though I raised her, she comes from a feral line and she's very high strung and aggressive so I considered her unadoptable and kept her.  She would be a fine farm cat if she outlives me.  She spends most of her time outdoors, but she will lie next to me if I am watching television on the couch.  She won't come into the bedroom, however, probably because my older cats consider that their territory.  She can and will beat up anyone who messes with her, but she won't start a fight over anything but food.

Anyhow, she is the only one with leftover runny eye from having URI as a kitten.  She will ONLY eat dry food and only a little bit at a time.  For her, I have turned it into a medication treat she gets with a syringe once a day, sometimes twice if the eye is acting up.  I put a dab of extra virgin coconut oil in a baby food jar, just a small amount, then mix in 1/2 capsule of the lactoferring powder (the stuff is not water soluble but melts right down in oil.)  If it's cold, I have to microwave the coconut oil for 10 seconds to make it liquid, because it's solid when it's cold but liquid when it's warm.  Room temp varies here.  Once the slurry of lactoferrin in coconut oil is made, I add about 4 drops of NutriVet Probiotics in Wild Alaskan Salmon Oil and mix that in (she loves it; I cannot stand the smell of it).  The whole mixture ends up being between 2 and 3 cc and I suck it into a 3 cc syringe, sit her on the washing machine and dribble the stuff into her mouth, careful not to go to fast and choke her.  She likes it, so she swallows it and is happy about it.

You syringe feed the rest of the food with the supplements in it? I hadn't thought of that either[emoji]128521[/emoji], might need a bit of thinning with water or that probiotic in salmon oil...

I mix Perla's into her Fancy Feast Pate meals. I have a syringe that is made of soft plastic that I cut the end off of. Usually she will eat some on her own than I fill what is rest in the syringe and she finishes that right up. The smooshed pate canned style foods come right through. She just licks it right off of the tip of the syringe and she is so used to doing so now. It works great for us. :bigthumb:

Where did you get the soft plastic syringe? That would be nice to have, I have rigid plastic ones.

Can you believe I am trying to find it again! I have had it for years. Will post a picture of it. :lol3: I think I got it at either PetSmart or Petco years ago. AND it still works great. Easy to clean also. Perla LOVES this syringe. IF I try another, she won't eat from it. YUP - that is my princess Perla. God help me if I change anything. :worship: I have to go to both PetSmart and Petco in search of this same one. I can't even remember the brand.

I cut the tip off as you can see and there is plenty of room for any type of pate style canned food to squeeze through. Perla just licks it right off!!

So, it looks like a rigid plastic, not flexible plastic, which is what I thought you were saying it was. The picture helps immensely! I looked for one like this at PetCo last week without success; will continue to search. Probably could order online. Thank you for posting the photos!

It really is not hard plastic like some. I am able to squish the tube a bit and even the tip. I filed the edges a little bit when I cut the tip off too. IF I can find the same one at the stores, I will let you know. I have looked on Amazon and cannot find the exact same one. Wish I could remember the brand. :lol3: It was a long time ago!
