We are trying to choose a streaming TV device and cannot decide on what to get, so I'm looking for some opinions.

Hulu looks pretty good because it offers a lot of episodes of each available show, but many shows we like are not on their list. We like to watch documentaries and history shows and that sort of thing is not on Hulu. We're thinking of maybe getting Apple TV as a supplementary device?? That way we can stream those types of programs off the internet. But how does Apple TV really work? Do they charge a monthly fee? I just got an email about the new Apple releases for November and they have redone the TV device and it looks promising. From what I can tell, it is just like having your iPad on the TV screen? I don't know anyone who has it, so I'm not really sure.

Then there are movies. Sigh. Those aren't on Hulu, either. So, do people get Netflix and Hulu and Apple TV? That seems like a lot. :freak: I'm confused about all this (and probably showing my age, lol!)

Any thoughts, ideas, opinions, suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I have Hulu and Netflix and got rid of regular TV. thats enough for me. You can start with those and if that's not enough you can add others. I have a Roku and it has a variety of channels you can chose to subscribe to.

We got rid of cable a few years ago and bought 2 roku players about a year and a half ago.  We looked at Amazon Prime, Netflix and Hulu to see which seemed to have the most things we would watch.  We ended up going with both Netflix and Amazon Prime.  It was a GREAT decision!  There are some other services out now that will play some regular tv channels; but I'm still satisfied with what we have.

We have an android box. We paid $150 for it but there's no monthly fee or anything. It has like every possible show you could imagine and tons of movies.

I have a Chromecast which I really like. It's not too difficult to set up.  It can stream Netflix and YouTube.  Pretty easy to use too, but you need to have Google Chrome installed and use it as your browser when you want to stream anything to your TV.  Your TV needs to have HDMI ports as well as a USB port so it will charge itself.  You can use a wall outlet to charge it too.

You sound like you like to watch many of the same things I like to watch, documentaries, History Channel, Smithsonian channel, and NatGeo Wild. I also like ID.   I have looked at some of the services to get rid of expensive cable but none of them looked interesting to me.  Of course they are going to carry what is the more popular and I know I don't have the same tastes as the majority.
